“First Colony Inn charming and comfy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Our recent Outer Banks trip was enjoyable, especially since we were fully rested, after over nighting at First Colony Inn. Each room is named after one of the first colonists to visit the NC shore back in the 1500 -1600's. This Inn is one of the first hotels constructed on the shore to offer overnight stays for early visitors to the island ... After all, the reporters and fans of Orville and Wilbur Wright caused a huge ruckus!

Antique filled large rooms with comfy beds and nice linens... what more do we need? Oh, the microwave, and mini fridge were handy as well. Breakfast in the morning was ample and tasty. Their private boardwalk stroll to the beach was great exercise... just across the street. It's so peaceful here at First Colony at the Outer Banks.

We'll be returning whenever we visit OBX. When there try these two restaurants, Owen's Seafood and Basnight's and your won't be disapointed.

Room Tip: Best ocean views are from the top floor rooms, they're especially large as well. They also offe...

Sounds like you did your research about the inn and our Outer Banks. We love to share the story of how the inn was moved from the oceanfront to its present location. We have been here a long time and really appreciate guests who appreciate the history of First Colony Inn. Thank you for sharing your experience and your tips for restaurants too. You picked two of the best places to eat on the entire Outer Banks. Please come back again and thank you.

Stayed one night. We liked the history of the old building and found the Agnes Wood room very comfortable. It was initially a little stale/musty but we opened the door to the small screened in porch and it was gone when we got back from dinner. Everything was clean and neat. Good bed. Easy beach access. Recommend sunset dinner at Millers.

The breakfast was the weak link. Not many options (Days Inn style Continental). Definitely nothing special.

Clean and neat and comfortable; all words I look for when I read these reviews. It sounds like you had a nice stay and I definitely agree with your recommendation about a "sunset dinner" at Miller's Waterfront Restaurant. Good choice. Thank you for taking the time to post your review here and also for staying with us. We appreciate feedback and use it to help us provide superior customer service to our guests. Please come back when you can.

my wife and I and another couple stayed at this hotel in May 2014 and had a wonderful time. The building dating from 1932 was full of old fashioned elegance. Our room was clean and neat with a very comfortable bed.
Breakfasts were wide ranging and an afternoon tea featuring tea, coffee and wine with snacks was a nice feature.
The beach is a short walk from the hotel and they provide towels and chairs. Unfortunatley , the pool was not yet open for the season

Room Tip: there a wide range of rooms with different shapes and designs, there is no elevator so if stairs are...

"Wonderful time, clean rooms, comfortable beds, nice breakfast." Thank you for posting your comments and mentioning all the above. We especially like the "old fashioned elegance" referral. We always appreciate hearing that our guests had a good stay and we sincerely hope you can come back to First Colony Inn and the Outer Banks soon.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

We stayed here for a couple of nights in early september 2013, as a stopover from Washington DC to Charleston during our 3 months trip in the US.

As mentioned in the name, this place is an inn, so you should not expect hotel service.

The room was big, but i found it quite old. It has a little kitchen and a big bathroom.

In the afternoon they served complimentary wine, cheese and cake which was nice. Breakfast was also quite good.

Location was great, only a short walk to the beach. The inn has a pool.

Thank you for stopping at First Colony Inn. September is certainly one of the nicest times to be on the Outer Banks of North Carolina as it is not as crowded, the weather is wonderful and everything is still open.

First Colony Inn is indeed "old". It first opened in 1932, on the oceanfront in Nags Head, and for many years was known as "the place to be" because of the charm, atmosphere and hospitality.
In 1988 the inn was moved from the oceanfront, which was threatening to destroy it, to its present location.

Renovations and refurbishing took place over the next three years and the exterior of the inn was returned to its original appearance, interiors were renovated, and modern conveniences were added. Traditional furnishings were selected to ensure modern comfort while maintaining the historic charm. First Colony Inn is listed in the e National Register of Historic Places, something we are very proud of.

Thank you again for staying with us and I hope your three month trip in the US was a pleasant one.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay. We got a great deal: 3 nights for the price of 2 this April. The staff were polite. Breakfast was fresh and sufficient. Afternoon tea/wine was nice to have. Beach is a couple of hundred meters and you have to cross a street but that is no big deal unless you expect this to be a beachfront place! It looks like a great place to have your wedding.

Able to accomodate us last minute, also allowed us to check in early, very polite service and recommended resturants in the area. Very clean well maintained room with balcony and rocking chairs in lovely grounds with a view of the sea. The bed was comfortable but the air conditioning unit was a little noisy. Breakfast was good but finished at 9.30am which was a little early especially whilst on holiday!!

This is a historic old inn, operating as a B&B. Rooms are finished with antiques. Air conditioned, private baths. Not ocean front, but not too far away down a walkway. Full breakfast. We were there in March. Located near the outlet mall. We prefer the B&B experience to typical American style hotels, and if you do too, this place will not disappoint.

Room Tip: King mattress in room two (Roger Bailie) was pretty soft.
