“No great, but not terrible”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

The room felt damp, but that is to be expected since it's near the beach. We stayed at the courtyard building across the street from the older part of the motel, which is right on the beach. The beds were hard and our room had no smoke alarm. We also found a water bottle under the bed from the previous family that stayed in that room, so I'm not sure how well they clean there. I don't think I'd stay here again, but it wasn't terrible. We were out on the beach most of the day so we didn't spend a whole lot of time in there anyway. There also was no wifi, so if you have any cell phone carrier besides Verizon than you might want to stay at a different place.

Our room smelt bad, we turned off the A/C since it was full of mold and made the room smell even worse. The floors were bouncing due to the rottened wood structure. Even if they tried to hide with paint the problems, these are dangerous for your health.
The lady at the front desk restricted the ice, since it was in an outside cooler and it was inconvinient for her to go across the street to get some...

There is NO internet.

The oceanview room at 250$ a nignt are a joke, a bad jake. The windows are bathroom size so there is no way you can enjoy the view. Sitting on the balcony you feel like in a ghetto.

The cleaning staff are very nice.

I would not sleep there again.Ever, it was a real rip off.

I love this place. It is quirky, quaint, quiet and quality. We have been staying here going on 6 years. We were concerned they would be closed because of hurricane Arther but when we called the night before the front desk reasurred us they were open and ready for our reservation. When we did arrive they allowed us to check in early with no issue. To adress some other reviews... Keep in mind that this place is an older beach side hotel. People track in sand, dirt and water which does create a dingy appearance to the rooms and might smell musty but they are 100% clean.Yes the beds are firm keep and they only have stand up showers keep that in mind when booking. Yes there are no toiletries other than soap in the room but if you ask the front desk they will be more than happy to get you something. Yes the ice is in a cooler outside the front office but it is clean and filled regularly. If it bothers you there is a great local market store less than a five minute walk away that sells everything including ice. Owens has a great beach entrance on a relatively secluded area of beach with a lifeguard nearby during the high season. I have noticed more people in the area now that Jeanettes pier has opened but it in no way effects the beach time quality. There is an outdoor shower to rinse off before heading back to dry land. I love this place and in fact booked a return trip before I even left from this one.

We decided to make our trip to OBX a day early. We wanted to beat the 4th of July rush. The lady at the front desk was great. We told her that my sister had two broken feet and she respected our request for a first floor room and a handicap space. I would love to say the same for the rooms. The beds were very loud and squeaky. They were very small for a queen. You could tell they just painted which was great. They were fairly clean but not my cup of tea for more than a night's sleep.

We stay in the Owens's hotel for 3 nights, nice and polite service.
We stay in the courtyard session, it is not water front but it is across from the Owens hotel portion that it is water front (so it is really close/walking 3 minutes to ocean).
Also the hotel is close to the Jannette's Pier (about 6 minutes walk) which it is great for night fishing.
There is an excellent restaurant (Owens restaurant) right besides the hotel.
There is a small pool behind the restaurant (it is all part of the Owens hotel)
So if you stay in the ocean front portion of the hotel you have to cross the road to go to the pool and the restaurant.
The hotel room is very small with a very, very small bathroom. No tub but a shower.
There were a very old but working refrigerator and microwave.
AC worked just fine.
The views from the windows are a back alley and an front parking lot.
Also free parking right outside your door.
The TV was a new one.
The outlet mall is right behind the hotel.
In general old dated, small but clean room for decent price and close to manny amenities (walking distance)

Room Tip: It is only one level hotel

Owens Motel is nothing fancy but it's clean and convenient to the beach, Jeanette's Pier, Fat Boyz ice cream and burgers, and Cahoon's Market. All within a 2 block distance. This special place is truly "old school" Nags Head.

We stayed in a west side/courtyard room that was a great value. It looked recently refurbished (in the last 2 years maybe) with newer mattresses and a very decent bathroom. No room for toiletries as there is only a pedestal sink. Shower was pretty small but worked well. The beachside motel rooms look really tiny and older, but kitschy. I peeked inside while the cleaning lady had the door open.

Has everything you need - fridge, small microwave, coffee maker, nice TV and 150 yards to the beach. Didn't check out the pool.

All in all...great value and perfect location. I would absolutely return.

Nothing fancy here. Just a motel, well at least where myself and my fishing buddies usually stay which is generally in the cheapest rooms they have. We are always happy with our accommodations though. Room is clean but not fancy. Like I said, perfect for fishing.
