If you're looking for a no-frills, no nonsense place to stay that is within walking distance of the beach, then this is the place for you. It's a bare necessities motel - no coffee for the coffee pot, no shampoo in the bathroom, no phone on the nightstand. We couldn't hear a thing from the rooms on either side of us (could have been because they weren't occupied) but every noise outside came into our room loudly and as clear as day. The motel-style outside access encourages guests to sit on the curb and chat - fellow guests woke us up every morning at 6:00am with their laughter. And the a/c unit was the most obnoxious contraption I've ever seen. It sounded like it was full of sand when it was on and clanged about every two minutes. And that was WHEN it was working. Housekeeping changed the sheets every day, but there was still sand in the bed every night. My boyfriend loved the TV and all of the channels, but he couldn't sleep through the a/c noise. We were seriously dissatisfied with our first room, and asked for another. They gladly changed it for us, although they openly admitted that they'd given us one of their least desirable rooms on purpose, as they were having a hard time getting other guests to settle on it. VERY close to the beach. Ocean view rooms aren't worth the extra money. GO PREPARED FOR THE NO-FRILLS. And know that there are limited eating options within walking distance. I wouldn't stay here again - it's not worth the money. This should be a $99/night hotel. Could probably have found something in the same price range with better amenities.

If anyone's idea of an old fashioned place to stay in Nags Head includes a freezing cold air conditioned room with small gnats flying all over the place, huge collections of dead ones on the window sills, and a balcony that can't be used because of an assortment of these and other pesky bugs flying around...not to mention the odd smells emanating from the beach access area below the balcony, please keep this Nags Head tradition to yourself.
To be fair, the Owens Restaurant on the other hand, was very good.
We enjoyed the pecan crusted scallops and especially , the soft shell crab and Key Lime pie. Friendly service and very well-run.

My family and I made our first trip to the Outer Banks and stayed at Owens Motel over Memorial weekend 2008 and couldn’t have been more pleased. The website described the rooms just as we found them to be!
Our original reservation was for an oceanfront efficiency (Fri-Sun). We decided last minute to go up Thursday night, getting us in after the office had closed. They made arrangements for us to be able to check into a courtside room at 3am and allowed us to keep our things in the room the next day until the oceanfront efficiency was available.
They considered all of our needs and arranged for our room to be on the first floor because we were traveling with our 7 month old and our 10 year old. They even made special accommodations for my husband brand new motorcycle!
Both rooms were extremely clean, which was very impressive due to the amount of sand we managed to track in! The courtside room was your typical room, 2 beds, fridge, coffee pot, etc. The ocean efficiency was more of a suite with everything we needed to make traveling with an infant manageable. There was more than enough room for us, all of our things, and the pack n play!
We plan to stay at Owens Motel for all of our future trips to the Outer Banks.

  • Liked — The overall environment
  • Disliked — If I had to pick something I would say the beds were a little uncomfortable

I'm not sure what people are expecting when they book a room in this motel and then complain that it's not plush and up to date. It's one of the older motels on the beach and it doesn't have the modern conveniences of the Holiday Inn, Best Western, Ramada, etc. It's an old-fashioned beach-front motel. It has courteous, North Carolina-style service, clean rooms, and above all, wonderful beach access. If you're not expecting a lot more than that, it's fine. If you want modern conveniences, go somewhere else. They'll be happy you did, and so will those of us who stay here year after year.

After checking several places on a late Friday afternoon my husband & checked into your hotel and spent 2 nights . April 13th & 14th, 2007. All was well. The desk clerk was friendly, the rate was good. The cute little coffee pot inside the room caught my eye because there was no coffee. After having dinnner and looking around town we stopped by the desk to pick up coffee thinking that housekeeping had overlooked us. I was told ( not too politely) that coffee is NOT furnished to guests and that there was a 7/11 up the street. A coffee pot but no coffee. Right?

I still wasn't too bothered because your restaurant was on the property. Sorry, found it not to be open for breakfast. Being that it was stormingthat morning, it wasn't too pleasant to have to go out to 7/11.

I found it not to be a good start to our vacation in Outerbanks.

Do not have high expectations of this place: Our air did not work, the clock didn't work, the TV remote did not work, bed was uncomfortable. We spent one night--more than enough--and promptly found another hotel (we went to the Hilton Garden Inn--way better about the same price). We were glad we did!!! The restaurant is absolutely incredible--we thought the hotel would be the same. Boy! Were we fooled.
