Description: This local, Outer Banks restaurant is now in it's 32nd anniversary season. That's probably why it's called a 'Nags Head Tradition' by locals. Open for breakfast and dinner daily. Weekends - spring and fall - and daily in the summer season, there's a robust fruit and breakfast bar plus some whopping good breakfast platters. Specialties are real southern cooking - like fried chicken. Also a specialty - local, Outer Banks seafood - broiled, fried, and always good. Steaks and prime rib round out the dinner menu. The "R" Bar is great for a late night meal or a special drink. The entire restaurant was remodeled in 2009 for a more coastal-comfortable, casual feel. And if all this isn't enough, there's Roxie's Retail - great, flirty finds for your home or wardrobe.

“Child friendly, but otherwise stay away”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2007

This place was hyped up in the books, and it got us since we had a baby with us.
The menu looked promising, but turned out to be terrible.
We couldn't find the crab in the crab cakes and everything was fried and plain. There was nothing special to the flavor of the food at all. Very boring and unoriginal. The service was ok.
Do not waste your time going here when there are so many other good restaurants on the Outer Banks.
The place was very family friendly which was a good thing, but not enough to bring us back again.

“overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2007

The reviews and guidebooks were glowing about this restaurant and its "huge salad bar." While the service was friendly and efficient, the food was really atrocious. The salad bar is not "huge" by any modern standards, just what you'd expect from any average restaurant. The crab and shrimp au gratin sounded so promising but ended up being tiny shrimp like you'd get from a can, covered with a thick, inedible layer of cheese and a handful of large croutons sprinkled on top (the description called this "breadcrumb topping" - I'm thinking they ran out of breadcrumbs. ) The sloppy and chintzy way this entree (which is supposed to be one of their specialties) was prepared really ruined the meal. It was about 8pm on a weeknight and the servers (and owners, I'm assuming) were standing around counting patrons and talking about how soon they could close, not pleasant for customers to overhear.

The menu is large and I'm sure there are other tasty things on the menu, but our experience was unpleasant.

“Excellent Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2007

We ate here two times during our trip. Both times were for breakfast. We skipped the all-you-can-eat breakfast bar (although it looked very good w/ lots of options & fresh fruit) and ordered off of the menu instead. The portions are monstrous and the prices are reasonable. They bring your food out on trays that are the size of the cafeteria lunch trays in elementary school. It’s kindof funny to watch people who had never been to the restaurant before. Their reactions to the trays and the large portions are priceless.

The local law enforcement was eating here both mornings we had stopped in.

“Great big breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2007

Only had breakfast here, but it was great. The buffet looked good, but we ordered off the menu. Hubby loved his omelet, I loved my scrambled eggs and pancakes. We will definitely eat here again next time in OBX.
