“One of the best on the beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013 via mobile

If you are looking for a fancy hotel with all the finest, then don't even get out of your car. BUT if you want a CLEAN hotel with amazing views, friendly people, and resonable rates then The Blue Heron is for you. We have stayed a lot of places up and down the Outer Banks and the Blue Heron is our favorite.2nd and 3rd floor has best views.

This hotel is ok for a 3-4 day stay but if you are planning on staying more than a week, it can get a little claustrophobic in the small rooms, especially if you are traveling with two kids! The rooms all have two double beds, an old analog color tv, a table with two chairs, a bathroom, and a balcony. The balconies are a great addition to the room, a great place to dry beach towels or just relax with a cup of coffee in the morning. The rooms need some major updates. The wallpaper is very 1990's -esque, and so are the bed comforters! The outside of the motel needs a major paint job, and the parking lot is cracking and ugly looking. The efficiencies have super small ovens (one year we tried to cook a pizza and the sides of the pizza had to be curled up to fit inside and once the pizza started to cook the whole room filled with smoke as if the oven hadn't been cooked in for years.) The bathrooms are very outdated as well. Other than the aesthetics of the motel, the service is good and the owners are very kind and welcoming. This motel has beautiful indoor and outdoor pool areas and a boardwalk to the beach. All rooms are ocean front but you have to stay on the 3rd floor to get the absolute best view. The second floor is ok, the ocean is only partially blocked by the dunes, and if you get a room on the first floor you wont see any ocean at all because of the dunes. This motel, aside from being a little outdated, are fairly clean and well kept. Just make sure you are ready to look at a lot of floral prints during your stay.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room on the 3rd floor for the best ocean view!!!

Every year for ten years of my elderly mother's life she and I took a trip for a week or two. We would look at a map of the US and say "that looks neat lets go there." We would hop on a plane, rent a car and explore places we'd never Been. We didn't have GPS or Internet then so we took our AAA books, maps and flew by the seat of our pants. We flew to Myrtle Beach and drove up the coast to the Outer Banks staying at any place that looked good. We found mediocre places, nice places and a few Gems. One of theses gems was the Blue Heron Motel. We got a first floor efficiency room on the ocean front. The dunes blocked the view of the ocean, but not the sound of the waves and the ocean breeze. There was a nice sidewalk from our room to the beach which made it easy for my mother to get to the beach. The prices were more than reasonable and the room was clean, roomy and well stocked with a screen door and widows that opened to let in the air. We stayed for three days. The people who owned it were lovely! This was one of the fondest memories of time spent with my mom ever! I fell in love with Nags Head and the Outer Banks. It was August 2009 when we were there but I stopped by September 2013 and it looks even nicer now.

Room Tip: We loved the walk out of the first floor north corner room. Less stairs to climb.

When I entered our room, I felt we had stepped back in time. I should have figured this out when the front desk (in a separate building) gave us a real key on a plastic keychain. Our room had wood paneling, floral bedspreads with matching floral curtains, and the bathroom walls and tub were surrounded by aqua blue 3 x 3 tiles (like in the 1960's). The room had a front door and back door that led to the beach. Our room was located on the first floor as we could not do stairs (no elevators) to the second and third floors. Those floors have great ocean views from their balconies, whereas the first floor had views of the sand dunes out the back door. (Room rates are the same for all three floors.) The beach access was right outside our back door.

Although this is an older hotel, it was very clean. The bed was very uncomfortable as it was too soft as though they were past their prime. The beds should have been replaced a long time ago. The hotel does not provide breakfast and there were only two small restaurants nearby that served breakfast. We opted to shop for breakfast at the nearby Food Lion grocery store and used the microwave in our room. The room also had a small refrigerator and coffee maker. The indoor pool that they advertise is actually at a local YMCA.

As a side note, we had to prepay for our one night stay by mailing a check a couple of weeks before our stay as they do not accept credit cards for one night stays. Our stay was on a Friday night in September 2013 and I found it difficult to reserve one night at other hotels as most hotels required a two night stay. Also, their cancellation policy was one week prior to arrival.

I took my elderly parents to this motel for two nights because the ratings on trip advisor made it sound like a slice of heaven if you could realize that it's not the Marriott. It's very convenient as a home-base for running up and down the Outer Banks. It is only 4.5 miles from Manteo.
Built in 1965, this hotel hasn't changed a bit. The beds are full-sized, and on both nights, my father fell out in the middle of the night, bruising himself the first night, and cutting himself the second morning when he hit the nightstand. The bathroom is very small, but that's how they were in the 1960's. The toilet is very low, and it was difficult for my mother to get on and off of it. The toilet paper roll is built-in to the green ceramic tiled wall, but it is only inches from the floor, and very difficult to reach back from the toilet to get the t.p. without the t.p. touching the floor. The towels were thread-bare and scratchy. We purchased extra towels from a store across the street. The pillows and sheets left much to be desired. Bring your own pillows. TV was basic cable, but we weren't there to watch television. Still, my father wanted to watch a ball game on CBS Sports Channel, and they didn't have it. The most disappointing thing was the lack of a beach view from the 1st floor. You see the dunes, but not the beach. Since my parents are elderly, they couldn't enjoy the view except for the one time they walked down the private boardwalk. They didn't see the spectacular sunrise (see photo below), because they couldn't venture out that early. I give this a fair rating as far as the motel accommodations go, they do not offer anything for breakfast., and I knew that when I booked it. But for the location on the beach, and its central location, I give it a better rating. I didn't think it was that clean, either. You know how the dust collects in the corners? It was there. The woman who checked me into the motel was very nice and gave me pamphlets directing me to restaurants and attractions.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms on the 2nd or 3rd floor. If you can walk the stairs, the 3rd floor offers the best...

Based on other reviews, we booked this hotel for a one night stay in advance of a week long Sunday to Sunday rental in Hatteras. The room was clean but this is a old 50's type facility and long in the tooth in all respects. It is pretty pedestrian and basic at best. The bathroom is 5X5 if that. The pot is low to the ground and you can probably sit, brush your teeth and soak you feet all at the same time if you are flexible. The air conditioner squealed every time the compressor kicked in. We could not enjoyably sittting on our balcony that evening nor sleeping that night. We spoke to the receptionist and the response was it's Saturday night, we can't get a repair person, you probably won't need it later tonight ( not so), or we can refund you and you can go somewhere else. Haven driven most of the day to get here, we weren't going to start looking for a room at 7:30 Sat. night. Sunday morning we packed up most of our things and went to breakfast. When we returned they had cleaned most of our room but no one was in sight. Our food in the refridge was gone as we're a pair of reading glasses. It was not a good experience. And oh, the mattresses and pillows leave a lot to be desired. But it was clean.
