The Marriott brand in the UK carries with it a certain expectation as to the facilities provided by the hotel and the quality of what is provided. Thus calling this hotel the "Marriott Fairfield Inn and suites" gave me a certain expectation that was not realised when I arrived. Against this expectation I was disappointed. However, against a somewhat reduced expectation, the hotel was nevertheless, well, OK.
First of all, its many good points. There is a free collection service from the airport (NB: Ring as soon as you clear customs 1-919-246-0107 or risk a long wait!). Upon arrival, you could not hope for more friendly or helpful reception staff! If Marriott have a 'Receptionist Oscars' award, then these guys get my nomination! The rooms are BIG with two double beds, desk, lounger, chair etc. Complimentary shampoo etc. is provided and the shower provides plenty of hot water (even if the fan in my room sounded like a Concorde engine on full reheat!). The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The self-service breakfast included cereals, one of which had BRAN - which, from general observation is about as rare as hen's teeth in the USA! There is a gymnasium and a swimming pool, which are open most hours for free use by guests. A limited amount of drink is available for purchase at reception, with a disproportionate number of beers (not a criticism!). There is free wi-fi - I do dislike those hotels that charge exhorbitant prices for internet access, which costs them nothing (installation costs having been recovered tenfold by now).
On the other side, the Waffle cooking appliance in the breakfast area left the whole place smelling of baked sugar: after a while you get used to this, but it is a foreigh bouquet to us Brits! The gym only had three items, a running machine, a cross-trainer and a bench with free weights, giving it a maximum capacity of three persons, efectively less if one person (as was usually the case) was enjoying a 45-minute run in the mornings! The swimming pool is kind of bite-size: I paced it out at 18ft long, but I was assured that it was more like 24. If I was right, it was 147 lengths for 1/2 mile, by which time I had lost count! There was a coffee machine in the room, and some filter thing, but no milk - you had to go into the breakfast area and sneak some of this up to your room. Sadly, there was no tea (unless you sneaked that upstairs as well!), and using the water from the coffee machine to make tea resulted in a brew with, er, an interesting taste (was it cea or toffee? Must be cea.)!
But for somewhere to stay on a business trip, it was OK.
I stayed in room 316 which had a noise like a water tank filling up all of the time. Either that or...
