“scots go skiing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

We just returned from a 5 day visit to Maggie Valley, 3 days spent at Cataloochee Ski. We are a family of 5. We started as novice's on the sloped but within 1hour my 16yr old and husband were hammering down the Black Diamonds. The ski area is small which may not be fun for an experienced skier but for families new to the slope this is a great place to start. We were lucky enough to have fresh snow fall on our arrival, which coming from a beach area made the place appear magical.Obtaining lifts tickets and ski equipment was fast and efficient on the Friday morning ,the staff friendly and informative. The rental skies and snowboards were in excellent condition.I did notice that there were longs lines the next day but this was a holiday weekend. The ski lift attendants took extra time educating my 10 yr old on getting on and off the chairs. It is so family orientated that many children were happily skiing by themselves and both our daughters were perfectly content to take off solo, enjoying meeting all the new people they conversed with on the lifts. We skied from 830am till 2pm each day took a 2hr break then headed back out to the slopes at 5pm as the sun set over the hills. We all loved night skiing, the slopes well lit up and fewer people to contend with. Look forward to returning.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

it is a small ski area but ggod for beginners and close to home.the surrounding mountains are beautiful and the town is quaint and cozy.the elevation is high enough where it gets a fair amount of natural snow too.

“Small overcrowded and only fair ski conditions but close to Atlanta”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

The slopes were very crowded this MLK weekend. Thus the lines were long to get on lifts. This It would be ok if the runs were longer and the snow better. We waited 25 mins for a 3 min run down a crowded green slope. Additionally lunches are surprizingly very expensive. If this place was not so conveniently located to Atlanta (3 hours) we would not come here. However, if your a beginner on a budget, you will enjoy a long weekend here. If you're used to better and funner conditions, Sorry but you wont find it here.

“Great For Kids - Fantastic Adaptive Program”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Cataloochee has taught all four of my children to ski and board, and I couldn't be happier. Not only is the Cat close to home, we've all learned the skills we need to ski and ride anywhere. The Cat-Trackers program is great, but the Adaptive program is even better. My youngest, who is legally blind with cerebral palsy, is now skiing independently, with just a guide to call out turning directions. What more could a mother ask for?

We've had a blast, skiing and riding together as a family, and look forward to many more years of wintering at the Cat!!!

“Had a blast at the Cat!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

I took the family(my wife and 9y/o nephew) skiing for the first time this winter break. We picked Cataloochee Ski area base on its close proximity to Florida, guarantee of snow, and great reviews on trip advisor. We purchased a "slide and stay" package thru Twin Brooks Resort and Cabins. The staff at Twin Brooks did a real nice job of packaging our ski info together(lift tickets, rental receipts, trail map, ski school assignment, etc) and making it very easy to get out of the lodge and on the slopes.

In the lodge: The scene was chaotic because it was Winter Break and the lodge was very crowded. The staff behind the rental counter and the snack bar seemed to take it in stride. They were very friendly and helpful.

In the beginners group ski school: Agan the scene was chaotic but the staff was very friendly and helpful.

On the slopes: The view from the top of the mountain was beautiful. The runs were varied and interesting. Some were challenging. The snow, being man made, was a little icy, but that had a lot to do with the fact that it was a little warm during the day. We learned that the best snow conditions were from 9am to noon. The snow was still "powdery". After noon the snow bacame packed from all the skiiers/boarders and this is when it became icy and slick. The lines for the lifts were shortest after 3pm. Night skiing was Awesome!
