Traveling on I95 - we were in search for a local place to dine and other reviews on Tripadvisor prompted us to give Pier 41 a try.
Sometimes we're hesitant to follow advice from this site - (due to what appears as some city's top picks), but in this case, the reviews were spot on!
Nothing fancy - but the place is clean and comfortable.
However, I must say, our first impression upon entering the restaurant made us a bit hesitant - not because of the place itself, but the unimpressive vibe we got from the hostess who was playing a dual role as busser and cashier and appeared very flustered, overwhelmed and not pleased about her situation at all.
But that all changed the moment we were seated and immediately greeted with the friendly disposition of our server, Breezie - who arrived with a basket of fresh hushpuppies.
Now - hushpuppies have never been high on my list of 'must haves' ... that is, until I took my first bite of these. YUMMM!!! Light - wonderful flavor - the best! To the point that we managed to devour two basket fulls - all which are complimentary! Sorry - but we just couldn't stop eating them!!
My husband got his fill of one of his favorite things - oysters that he ordered broiled and deemed delicious. I had battered shrimp and flounder. Flounder was ok. I have a thing about seeing the skin on my fish -and this was left on the bottom - but the shrimp were perfectly cooked. Light batter - pop in your mouth wonderful!
Good - and very unique tasting coleslaw as well.
Being the foodies we are - with a history of owning restaurants in our past - observing what goes on overall in a restaurant is just second nature for us.
What we witnessed - that despite the hostess, who was working very hard, the two servers on the floor were equally as busy - but did their jobs effortlessly. Collectively they had 16-20 tables to service while we were there, and never missed a beat! Came back with beverage refills throughout our meal, food came out quickly and bill was presented as soon as we finished. Most impressive!!
Note to hostess - I've been there. I know juggling all those hats can be a challenge - but your customers shouldn't have to see your frustration. It does not make for a good impression. A congenial smile with a 'I'll be right with you ... goes a long, long ways.
By the time it came to pay - owner Steve was behind the cashiers desk. A very nice man - who can be very proud of his establishment.
