Read this review! My husband and I were taking a day trip to an area neither of us were familiar with, so we used our "never let us down" Trip Advisor. Pier 41 Seafood came up as being worth the trip despite only 3 reviews. Upon arrival, the place was PACKED! We were worried that it would take a long time to get seated but before my husband could get his hands washed, we had a table! (And we were the 5th name on the sign-in list for seating.) The restaurant has a strong local following so it'll be here for a while.
WONDERFUL service! The waitstaff didn't have visible tatoos, piercings and each server had their hair pulled up out of our food. They were attentive and happy to accomidate our every need.
We were started with hush puppies and honey butter that were excellent! Lightly crispy outer layer with tender and slightly sweet core. The honey butter was prepacked LandOLakes, which suited us just fine. The tea was home brewed, fresh, and poured over crushed ice. Our meals came out of the kitchen surprisingly quick, and were so hot we had to cool each morsel.
My husband had the oysters and I had a local favorite, spots (mullet fish - a VERY mild moist seasonal fish). The oysters were lightly fried, tender on the inside and full of flavor. The sweet potato fries were delicious. Three spots were served on the dish that had traditional cornmeal breading and then fried (fins and tail are always attached). The fish had an enjoyable meld of light seasoning and mellow fish flavor. When I finished the third portion, I could have eaten 3 more. I selected a baked potato and it is a REAL potato in foil served with a margarine spread and sourcream. (This is the ONLY negative I can share - the potato was slightly underdone but still edible.) Their coleslaw is a well balanced blend of sweet and tangy.
The owner is a pleasent gentleman who has been in the food industry for 37 years. He takes the time to stop at every table to be sure each guest is satisfied. If you require more than a moment, he'll pull out a chair and join your table until you're satisfied. We observed him seating patrons, serving meals and clearing tables. Now there's a man who knows how to run a restaurant, and it shows!
The ambience is above average for their prices. This establishment is affordable for families, fixed income folks, or frugal travelers. Worth the 15 minutes off of I-95. We will always adjust our travels to include a trip to Pier 41 Seafood!
