“Great Place To Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

The lake is very peaceful and relaxing. The Inn itself is very nice, the staff is OUTSTANDING!!!! They are very helpful and go above and beyond to please. They remembered our last name (which is a tricky name to pronounce) and called us by it throughout our stay, several of them even knew that we were there to celebrate an anniversary and told us Happy Anniversary a couple of times (a few days apart) the point is they make a point of remembering who you are and act like they care, that was impressive to me. I loved the restaurant on the property and the convenience of having everything there together. It is a very nice place for a weekend getaway and you will be treated like royalty, it's a very special place.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cooper room, it was VERY noisy but very nice. You can hear everything that goes on...

We recently spent a weekend at The Greystone Inn. Our initial plans were to take advantage of the croquet court, the canoes, pontoon boat, hike to some of the nearby waterfalls, etc We, along with a several surrounding states in our region, were blessed with several inches of rain for the weekend so we altered our plans. It was raining before we left but I knew it would still be a great trip....and it was!

The Inn is well maintained and the mostly young staff really did exude attentive Western North Carolina hospitality. Guests ranged in age from 30 up. Since it was chilly, the staff kept the wood or gas fireplaces lighted....so warm and cozy. Our mansion room was spacious with a balcony overlooking the lake. The bathroom was adequate...don't expect the Ritz in this historic building. Think historic with updates, cozy, warm, friendly, spacious. (There is a "new" building with lakefront rooms if old and historic isn't your cup of tea.) We arrived just in time for the afternoon tea served every afternoon and then a trip on the lake on the Miss Lucy....a heated, enclosed boat perfect for touring the lake in good or inclement weather. The 6 course gourmet dinners and breakfasts were also included in our room rate. The food was well prepared and attentively served in the lakeside dining room. Among the many advantages of staying at The Greystone Inn is access to resort amenities enjoyed by members of the Lake Toxaway Country Club and includes access to activities such as golf on the Chris Spence golf course, tennis, croquet, swimming, fitness center, onsite spa, canoes, kayaks, etc. When the rain was just a drizzle, we were able to drive to a couple of waterfall hiking spots with breathtaking views of waterfalls and Lake Jocassee....a dry day would have been meant we would have spent a day exploring nearby hiking trails, many with waterfalls.

The second generation manager, Clark Lovelace, was terrific. Loved the history and stories he entertained us with while we were touring the lake on Miss Lucy with Clark at the helm.

A great, relaxing trip even on a rainy weekend!

Room Tip: We prefer lake view.

This is one of our favorite places for a wonderful weekend get away. We try to plan it so that we can take advantage of the free golf on the country club's beautiful course. With tea, the champagne cruise, appetizers before dinner, & the fantastic dinners and breakfasts, we just love it! Clark, the inn manager, and the excellent staff make sure that everything is perfect. And it always is! This is a special place!

Room Tip: We love the mansion as well as the suites overlooking the lake. You cannot go wrong.

Although it rained incessantly during our recent stay, we can honestly say that our stay at the Greystone Inn was one of the best weekend trips we have taken in quite awhile. We had heard about Greystone for years, and finally took advantage of a Groupon special during their shoulder season (April and May). Although prices seem steep, this inn is really an incredible value, because it includes full breakfast, high tea at 3, a champagne cruise on Miss Lucy, and a delicious six course dinner. With all that food, we didn't need to have lunch (which is extra at the nearby country club). The staff is incredible - we loved Jordan, the fresh-faced, lovely young woman who served us both dinners and one breakfast. Other staff standouts were Katie, Luke, Chris, Robbie, and Mason. Clark, the friendly general manager, piloted Miss Lucy, and regaled us with fascinating stories about the history of Lake Toxaway and the Greystone on our rainy afternoon cruise. Clark also came up with a fun trivia contest that twelve of us participated in that made the hour before dinner fly by. We canoed during a brief break in the rain, and took an afternoon walk on the golf course under our umbrellas since no one was playing golf by that point. Since golf was included on our package, it was a shame that the weather didn't cooperate so that we could enjoy their challenging course. The surrounding development is lovely, and when we come back, we want to check out their hiking trails. The Greystone is about 3 hours from our home (just south of Charlotte), so it's an easy drive for a weekend trip. The Greystone is truly a great place to de-stress and relax, just like the millionaires did one hundred years ago at the 220 room hotel that was once on the lake. Our hot tip is to bring your own wine and pay the $20 corkage fee at the restaurant. This way we could enjoy exactly what we wanted at minimal extra cost.

Room Tip: If you are staying in the mansion, spend a little more and stay in one of the deluxe rooms. The Arms...

The Greystone Inn has become our favorite getaway place. The setting is absolutely beautiful, overlooking Lake Toxaway and surrounded by mountains. At 3000 feet in altitude, the skies on a clear night seem to be filled with a million stars. The six course dinner in the lakeside dining room is one of the best meals I have ever had. If you want the full experience, get up early for the country breakfast, go hiking or play golf in the morning, have lunch at the country club, enjoy afternoon tea, cruise the lake on Miss Lucy, enjoy your fabulous dinner and finish off the day on your covered porch overlooking the lake with a glass or two of wine. Then, do it all over the next day with perhaps tennis or boating in the morning. I guarantee you will return many times just as we have.

Room Tip: We prefer the separate but adjacent Hillmont Building. Choose one of the top level rooms with cathe...

The Greystone Inn is our retreat from the hectic pace of life. It's the one place I go to truly relax. We've been going for a number of years now, and the warm welcome we receive very much feels like coming home. The setting is peaceful and serene. The staff is friendly and gracious. The food is amazing.
For a truly historic experience, get a room in the main mansion. I recommend the Nunnally Room or the Reynolds Room (if you can handle stairs) or the Heinitsh Room (far fewer stairs). For a more contemporary (and spacious) experience, get a room in either the Hillmont building or one of the Lakeside Suites. Our favorite room is on the top floor of the Hillmont building - with a large private covered balcony, great views of the lake, vaulted ceilings and a gas fireplace.
If it's pretention you want, go to the Ritz Carlton. If you like the idea of a Bed & Breakfast, but the idea of having breakfast with a group of strangers is unappealing to you, The Greystone Inn is essentially an oversize Bed & Breakfast - just enough like being a guest in someone's home to be warm and inviting, and just enough like staying in a hotel not to be awkward.

Room Tip: For a truly historic experience, get a room in the main mansion. I recommend the Nunnally Room or t...

Stayed in a junior suite overlooking Lake Toxaway. The Hillmont room was so charming, spacious and had a comfortable bed. The on site restaurant offers many delicious selections for breakfast and dinner. The golf club is a short walk away and we ordered lunches at the club. Beautifully maintained 18 hole course with many gorgeous views. We did spend time in the original Inn for tea in the afternoon..it is a beautiful home.

Room Tip: If possible stay in a junior suite overlooking the lake.
