“We should have read the reviews...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012 via mobile

Where do I start? The door was ajar when we arrived. Filthy carpet, sticky kitchen floor, and dusty vents greeted us, as did the damp, stuffy air. We adjusted the AC thinking that would alleviate the air issue, but by the next morning, the pilly sheets on the bed felt damp. We called and asked if we could be moved, only to be told that our time share company had to handle that. We were silly enough to think we could stick it out, but by mid-week, we were ready to check out and get a hotel. We would have to put our towels in the dryer in the morning so we didn't have to dry with damp towels after our showers, and even our clothes felt damp. Hoping to save our vacation and the money for a hotel room, we called again to ask for a dehumidifier; they said they could deoxidize the air, which did take all day, but we were already of a mind to be gone the entire day since the unit was so uncomfortable. There was a minimal improvement, but at least a bit. We did check out a day early and got a hotel. Even after two phone calls and the deoxidization process, no one ever called us or asked when we checked out if our unit had improved, nor was there any apology. We were enormously disappointed with the accomodations and the poor attitude of the management. It was evident that the furnishings and flooring had not likely been updated in some thirty years, but the quality of the air we breathed for almost a week was our biggest concern.

After reading the reviews we were concerned about our week at the Fairways of the Mountains. I am glad to say we were pleasantly surprised and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had both the A & B units and both were clean and comfortable. The appliances are not state of the art but were clean and functional. The beds were comfortable and the views over the 10th fairway of the golf course were great. The Bald Mountain golf course was both beautiful and tough but fun to play. Would have liked to have internet access but the restaurant, a short walk away, had free access. Do not miss a meal at the Lakeview restaurant, excellent food.

Pros: Quiet in the woods, whirlpool tub, roomy kitchen and clean appliances, the best (king) bed I have ever slept in, pool was a short walking distance,
Cons: NO internet (although I did find a coffee shop down the road that I wish staff would have mentioned on day 1), mildew in the shower, dirty carpets, the most dreadful sofa bed EVER! I felt guilty asking my kids to sleep on it, and this place is very hard to find and far from everything. The lay out of the unit is awkward--the front door opens into a small foyer and small living room and then everything else is downstairs (kit. bedrm, bath)

To start off with, if you are a Wyndham owner, you might be placed here, which is a property that is NOT owned by Wyndham or managed by them either--very confusing! We were greeted with very lack-luster employees of VRI, who were extremely unhelpful with everything. We rented out an "A" and "B" unit. We couldn't even go into our "B" unit due to the overwhelming smell of mold and mildew. We informed the front desk of the smell, they sent out workers to "de-oxidize" the air, which takes all day (so you can't come back to your room AT ALL!) When we returned, the smell was still present, so we informed the staff once again. They sent someone back who must have just sprayed a TON of "powder fresh" spray in the unit, because it now just smells like "powder-fresh" mold. The carpets are all stained, the circuits are overloaded with just the use of the lights in the bedroom (which you have to go into the B unit to reset the breaker box), the kitchen had old food in it from a previous renter, and our keys "demagnetized" from one day out walking at Chimney Rock. The decor is also EXTREMELY out of date. While we spent most of our vacation away from our units, the amount of time we did spend in it was painful. And while all activities, except golfing, were a 3-4 minute drive away, the amenities (Rumbling Bald ones that is) were very nice (except DO NOT go on August 26-29th because it is the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad games and there are hundreds of people at the resort).

We rented a 2 BR condo from a timeshare owner for a week. This was one of the nicest condos we've stayed in. When we arrived, the place wasn't spotless (I had to pick up a goldfish and some watermelon seeds off the floor), but it wasn't filthy. The layout (upstairs and downstairs) was nice; our noisy teenager stomping on the floor didn't bother any downstairs neighbors. We didn't use the fireplace, but did use the whirlpool tub and the decks a lot! It was so quiet there; all we could hear in the mornings were the birds. This is part of the Rumbling Bald resort, and there were lots of amenities. Unfortunately, they were all at another part of the resort a couple of miles away. Having to drive to all the amenities was the only drawback to our stay (there was a pool within walking distance, but it was lackluster with no shade; we never used it). There is a great fitness center that we used several times, a croquet field that we used, a nice swimming pool (be aware that you MUST have a tube to go into the lazy river), a beach for the lake, tennis, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, etc. There are events scheduled throughout the week and a spa is also right there. (We didn't try either). They have a meeting on Monday mornings to familiarize you with the resort and the area. There was free internet in only a couple of spots; we never used b/c of the inconvenience. No network available in the units. There were three restaurants: one at our location--mostly for golfers, and two at the main location, a fine dining place which we didn't try, and a sports pub where we ate twice--the food was really good!
