We've been going to John's two or more times per year during our annual September visits to the Outer Banks and they have never let us down. Today we broke form a bit and actually ordered something other than the usual dolphin boat and root beer. The dolphin boats (deliciously fried mahimahi and crinkle-cut fries with amazing tartar sauce) are of course incredible. Today we also tried the lobster roll and a couple of new offerings. The lobster roll was refreshing and I can see that being a tasty option during a hot day at the beach, but overall it wasn't memorable. Then again, it also wasn't very expensive, so you won't break the bank if you want to try it out.
There seems to be a trend this year of restaurants stuffing anything and everything into an egg roll wrapper and frying it up. John's is serving what seems to be the most popular variety, the cheesesteak egg roll, as well as a pulled pork egg roll. They're fairly small and cheap ($1.25) so we tried one of each. They were both pretty decent, with the pulled pork winning the flavor battle. John Jr. himself came out to ask what we thought and ended up giving a great tip that you can ask for onions in the cheesesteak roll, which we wish we had done.
On our last trip I finally tried one of the famous shakes (chocolate-cherry, thanks to another reviewer's suggestion) and they're as good as everyone says.
Basically, a trip to John's is a must if you want to experience some of the best food this area has to offer.
