“Sympathetic to smokers but nice staff.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013 via mobile

Nice staff/ management .Clean and tidy breakfast room. Room dusty, pieces of food visible in one corner, hair on bathroom floor. Beautiful view of ocean - parking lot also in view but that was okay. Good water pressure from shower. carpeting appears new or in good condition. BEWARE non smokers. The non smoking policy not seriously enforced - they just charge a fee for smoking and they have designated areas- which could be near your room. We had second hand smoke in our room from the room next door. Gross, especially when you have bad allergies. I wont stay here again, but if you don't mind the possibility of smoke, it is a good value and the staff are kind but sympathetic to smokers.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at our property. I will share your comments with our housekeeping staff and you are correct that though smoking is not allowed inside the rooms there are areas where it is allowed on the property, as of this response. We appreciate your nice comments concerning our staff and we do hope you are able to visit the Outer Banks another time. We thank you for visiting, Tonia.

Despite being a small and outdated hotel, I was very pleased with our stay here. Cute and quaint are how I would describe it. Arrived for Flying Pirate weekend and loved the accomodations the hotel made for runners and their families. Early breakfast, special welcome on the marquee, and late check out enabled race weekend to be a bit less stressful. Staff at the front desk was very friendly at check in and check out and even asked if I was a runner and how my race went. Room was clean, breakfast food was good with plenty of variety, and I liked being just a short walk from the beach. Thanks so much for a great stay!

Congratulations for running in the Flying Pirate Half Marathon! Make plans to join us for "Storm the Beach" in June or the Full/Half Outer Banks Marathon in November. We appreciate your choosing one of our events to participate in and we appreciate your choosing our hotel as your "home base." We were happy to put out the 4 AM breakfast for all of you---we said if people will really eat that early before they go out then we'll put it out and it's been a hit since we started doing it. We hope we may see you for another marathon or just for some fun---please feel free to call and I would be happy to help make reservations for your next stay! Thank you, Tonia

Upon check-in, we were greeted at the front desk with a smile. We were also greeted with warm chocolate chip cookies, coffee and tea, and hot popcorn. The kids loved that. Our 2 bedroom with living room and kitchen was very clean, and the pack and play I requested was already in the room--and it looked brand new! The furniture in the living room was a little stiff and the bathroom could have used a good spruce up, but all in all, everything was there that we needed, so no complaints. You can throw a rock and hit the ocean, and we had a great view from a couple of the rooms in our unit. Outside the room were wooden adirondack chairs for enjoying the view, the smells and sounds. The location is also great for Kill Devil Hills. We were less than 5 minutes to the Wright Brothers Memorial, a couple blocks from an awesome putt putt golf, and within a couple blocks from the movie theatre and tons of restaurants. Because I paid upon check-on, there was no need to go through an official check out. We managed to snag a table and a hot breakfast next to their lobby. It was very crowded for some reason, as it was a Friday morning during off-peak. That would be my only criticism: to expand the breakfast area if you truly want to make that one of your selling points for the hotel. It was quite cramped. All in all, however, it was a great hotel, at a great off-peak price, in a great location!

I've stayed here twice over the past 6 months while planning a wedding, once in Oct 2012, and again over Easter, 2013. Its been a nice, cheap place to stay, that's close to the ocean and in Kill Devil Hills close to a lot of restaurants and sites (Wright Brothers Museum/Memorial, and Jockey's Ridge). The hotel looks pretty crappy from the outside, as its apparently fairly old. However, the website boasts that it was fully renovated in 2011, and I believe it. All the rooms of new appliances, and the beds/linens are extremely comfortable. I was skeptical at first, b/c I have long hated Days Inns, but the price and location was worth it, at least in the off season. I was impressed with this location however, as the rooms were kept up nice, and are extremely clean. The Housekeeping staff does a great job each day, all sand, dirt and trash is cleaned up nicely, and the beds are made perfectly.

I highly recommend the 2 bedroom suites. They are perfect for multiple couples, or even a family and the living space/kitchen area is adequate for a short stay. My only complaint about the place is that the ice machine is located far away from the building that houses the suites, and is a pain in the butt. I will say that it allowed me to walk past some of the small, non-suite rooms, and they don't look all that appealing. Those rooms are very small, and seem a little more grungy. So I advise solely booking suites.

For those people complaining about musty smells, they just need to be smacked. Its a beach hotel. The water is about 50yrds away, if that, so what do you really expect? Even $10,000/week beach houses with the finest of accommodations have musty smells and the occasional ant. So a Days Inn which sees a lot of traffic isn't going to be an exception. Even whatever smells do exist, aren't really overpowering and I was never left with a feeling of it being unclean. Its just a typical smell you get from enclosed places at a beach.

The morning bfast was decent. Its your standard continental affair with waffle maker, pastries, bagels, english muffins, cereal, juice, milk, coffee, hot sausage patties and eggs. Nothing overwhelmingly awesome, but for a free bfast for one or two mornings, it gets the job done.

In the end, if you're looking for a clean and comfortable stay, on a budget, its the place for you. If you come in looking for a 5-star resort, you'll be mistaken. It is, afterall, a beach hotel and all beach hotels in the outer banks are going to have some wear given age and traffic.

Room Tip: Book a suite. I recommend the 2bedroom, 3 Queen suite with oceanview. There's only one ocean vie...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us during both your trips to the Outer Banks, we appreciate it very much. I do want to add 1 thing however---the whole hotel was not renovated in 2011. As mentioned in my previous comments on another review--we take a few rooms every year to renovate so we don't do the whole hotel at once. The 2 story building you stayed in is almost 100% renovated--that building does contain the queen suites as well as the 2 bedroom suites you mentioned of varying styles. If you must return to help plan for the wedding we would be happy to host you again and please feel free to contact us and we would be happy to help make reservations for your next stay! Thank you, Tonia
