“A Room with a View!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

Greetings:

As the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty Hawk had long been on my "Bucket List", I decided to take advantage of Spring Break and drive down to Kill Devil Hills. Based on Trip Advisor reviews, I chose Shutters on the Banks as my base for rest and relaxation. Shutters on the Banks is a very pleasant and quaint hotel located directly on the beach with superb ocean views from its 3rd and 4th floor rooms.

Initially, I had reserved a 3rd floor room with two queen beds; but upon check-in I was "upgraded" to a 4th floor room with even better views at no charge. The room was large and comfortable with a spacious balcony. The bathroom, while quite small, provided strong water pressure and steamy-hot water on demand. The free Wi-Fi was very good with strong signal and never a connection drop. There is an indoor pool and a decent continental breakfast (though I far prefer the nearby "Stack 'em High" for my breakfast fuel-up). Shutters' location is perfect! You can see the top of the Wright Brothers Monument from the 4th floor walk-ways and you are near just about any eating establishment worth trying. If there was any downside to my stay at Shutters, it was the noisy construction work of the ongoing renovations. This construction work did get on the nerves especially when it continued into Saturday after I had been assured that there would be no construction work over the weekend; but I am certain that by the time the 2013 Summer season is in full-swing that the renovations will be but a memory.

All in all, I would confidently recommend Shutters on the Banks to anyone who wanted to spend a few relaxing days in the Outer Banks.

Room Tip: Reserve a 3rd-floor room to get an ocean view and then upon arrival see if you can upgrade to a 4th...

This is honestly the best hotel I have stayed in at the Outer Banks. The room was clean a d modern. Very nice matress, as opposed to most area hotels. The rooms have plantation shutters, which were a nice touch. The location is great, as you are near many of the area's better restaurants and bars.

Very clean & right on ocean. Grandkids loved the heated indoor pool & hot tub. There is also an outside pool. We were down in March very windy but great views of the ocean from the gazebo. Nice breakfast and area were kids played checkers. Very friendly staff. If you want a view of ocean from room get a room on tower 3 rd / 4th floor. Beds very great as well. We will return. Toolk advantage of winter rates. Close to alot of everything.

Booked this hotel for a last minute 4th of July getaway. It was nearly full & the only way we could get a room for 4 nights was to split it between 2 different rooms. The staff was very helpful making the arrangements.
Hotel was decent, rooms were clean & had the usual furnishings. It is located on the beach, with direct access, which is what we came for. The pools (2, one indoor + indoor hot tub) were heated & nice & were a big hit with grandkids. Our only complaint was breakfast. Not the food, but so crowded we couldn't get near it or even get a cup of coffee. We understand it was a holiday weekend & the place was packed, but if you're going to offer breakfast, you should be able to accommodate ALL of the guests. Otherwise decent hotel for a decent price.

Convenient location, great price for a resort area hotel. Adequate continental breakfast available if you want it, and you should have it once for the decor of the breakfast area alone, but several great restaurants which serve breakfast are nearby if you prefer.

Room Tip: Be sure to request a room in the tower for the best ocean view.

I was holding a family birthday celebration and contacted Shutters to reserve a bank of rooms for the weekend. Ms. Ottavio could not have been more accommodating, providing the tower 3rd floor oceanfront rooms, since the 4th floor was under renovation. Each family member reported having a very comfortable bed and room. As a family we were able to use the breakfast room for our "picnic" dinner on Friday night, and it was also very comfortable as well. Sandy took excellent care of all the family members making their reservations, even down to a providing an extra room for unexpected members coming in from Europe at the last minute. It was a delight working with the owner and staff at this hotel!

We wanted a winter get away to relax and we found this at Shutters on the Banks this past weekend. We stayed in a room on the 4th floor and listened to the ocean at night. The room was really nice and clean, our daughter was excited about the Bath and Body Works soap, shampoo and lotion, it was one of her favorites. The indoor pool and hottub was a great treat after our day trips around the outerbanks. The easy access to the beach was a highlight for me. The breaksfast had some nice selections. Thanks for a great weekend. We will recommend this place to our OBX friends and we plan to come back.

Room Tip: If you like to hear the ocean and a view of the ocean stay in the Tower rooms 4th floor.
