“Another great stay at The Cavalier”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

Stayed here with my mother for the second time at the end of March for 3 nights before checking into our cottage on Hatteras. This stay was even better than the first time! We had an oceanfront efficiency, which was a true bargain compared to the prices of other oceanfront hotels in the area. This made a great base camp for our touring and shopping on the northern beaches.

Our room had just had the front windows replaced, so we were thrilled to be able to open them and enjoy listening to the surf. The room was spotless clean, and the kitchenette was very well stocked with utensils, pots & pans, coffee maker, full size fridge, full size stove/oven, microwave and toaster. The beds were comfortable, and we had no problem with the water temperature or pressure as a previous reviewer stated. The staff was very helpful, and genuinely welcoming.

The big plus to us at The Cavalier oceanfront rooms is the covered porch. We were there at the end of March, and had some rain and wind. The porch area was sheltered from the wind by the dunes on either end of the property, and you literally step off the porch and onto the beach. We loved walking out our door onto the porch and just chilling in the comfy Adirondack chairs provided.

The parking is tight, and each room has an assigned parking space. We were surprised at how full the parking lot was when we returned from shopping and dinner the first night! It was a Thursday night, in March, and almost all the rooms were occupied.

What we really enjoyed most this stay was the people and the fun community atmosphere on the porch. The guests ranged from older mother/daughter groups like ourselves, to young families, to groups of couples traveling together. Everyone gravitated to the porch, and there were groups doing sing-alongs, visiting, and all having a wonderful time. Everyone was very considerate and polite - if you had to walk through a group's area to get to your room, folks moved out to make way for you. 10 PM is 'quiet time’, and everyone adhered to that and was very considerate with their music and kept the noise level down after that. We enjoyed listening to the group on the end with their guitar and sing-along. You don't get that atmosphere and fun at a cookie-cutter chain hotel with private balconies.

Even though The Cavalier does not take check-ins or check-outs on Saturdays, the office was open if we needed anything, staff was very visible and friendly, and there was coffee available in the office if you didn't want to make your own in the room.

Just a great, fun place to stay. Very comfortable and a great value. We love the vintage charm of the motel, and truly hope the owners don't sell out. My only suggestion for improvement would be new windows on the back side of the oceanfront so you could open them and get a cross-breeze, and new pillows. I hope it's not another 7 years before I can return here!

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms on the far ends have less foot traffic in front of you on the porch.

Right on the beach, older motel with friendly family owned atmosphere. No bugs, clean, and great price. Beautiful ocean view from my ocean front. We had a full kitchen which saved us some money on eating out. Plates, pots, pans, glasses, and silverware are furnished. Which I was surprised about that. I Can't complain about anything. If they would let me live in this room I would! We'll be staying here again when we return to the Outer Banks.

The Cavalier Motel is in a great location and convenient to most everything. We stay here every October in one of the 2 bedroom cottage units. We love the fact that the cottage units are pet friendly. We don't travel with our dogs, so a non pet friendly Motel is a deal breaker. The beach behind the motel is very wide as compared to the very narrow beaches north of the motel. The staff here is very friendly and it is nice to see the same families year after year that stay here.

Our family (at times up to 25 of us) stay at the Cavalier every summer for a week renting several of the 2 and 3-bedroom cottages. That suits our situation well because we like to be at the same
location but not piled on top of each other in one large cottage. The location is perfect, the pool is wonderful and the rooms are adequate for the most part. Sometimes we have to consolidate eating utensils and cookware to have enough for a large crowd, but it always works out. We love the old Nags Head feel and are very content with the family tradition just like it is. Our grown children love it and now the grandchildren love it just as much. Give it a try!

We stayed here a couple of times in the past, the most recent being last October. This year we decided to stay there again. We really enjoyed our stay. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. Yes, the bathroom and shower are a bit cramped, but not so much that it made our stay unenjoyable. We love how pet friendly they are at the Cavalier! The staff is always very nice and helpful. We like it so much that we've already booked out stay for next October. I can't wait to go back!

First of all, this is the type of place we prefer to stay. Due to car problems, we were late getting there the night of our arrival, but there was no problem. The staf was beyond friendly and helpful, the location was ideal and being able to take my babies to the beach made for an absolutely fantastic trip! Just wish we could have stayed longer :-(

Depending on what you're looking for in a motel.....if you're looking for a vintage feel, quaint rooms, the ocean at your front door with no dune, wonderful staff....the is THE place to stay. Built in the 50's, family-owned......much more to offer than the cookie-cutter condos or hotels where staying on the 3rd or 4th floor is the only way to have an ocean view.

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms are the best of course. Kitchenettes or non-kitchenettes.
