“A Pleasant surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

We booked this dinner on the 2nd night of our vacation. Upon entering, we did not expect much as it was dimly lit, and we were the only one's there at 6:15 p.m.? The food (on the other hand) was creative, wonderfully presented, and had a piquant preparation! Dollar-for-dollar, so much better than Ocean Blvd. Bistro!

“Nice surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013 via mobile

Found this place after running into 90 minute wait times everywhere else. What an awesome surprise. Great atmosphere, very accommodating staff. Overall a solid solid 4. I'll be back.

“Inventive dishes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

Flying Fish Cafe is one of the top tier restaurants on the Outer Banks in terms of inventive menus, ambiance, and wine options. This was our first visit so expectations were high. Our choice of wine on the menu wasn't available but the waiter suggested another, which was a fine substitute. We chose tuna with wild rice and crab and a scallop dish with a risotto cake. Both dishes had potential but were extremely salty. At the end of the meal I gave feedback to the waiter to tell the chef about the heavy salt and was comped a dinner. Good customer relations but hope in the future that the chef tastes his dishes before serving them. We took home some leftovers and my husband commented that the first taste of the leftovers was not salty but that the salt taste escalated the more he ate. Perhaps they used a different type of salt than table salt, which intensified the salt taste?? Maybe this was an off day for the chef so, all-in-all, I'd try the Flying Fish Cafe again but would ask about salt application upfront.

“Shocked by all the excellent reviews”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

After reading all the excellent reviews, we decided to dine at the Flying Fish on our last night in OBX. We are a family of 4. My 12 year old ordered a kids steak and the rest of us ordered adult meals. We had an order of fried calamari as an appetizer - our very first bite of it was overwhelmingly salty. My husband and son each ordered a 10 oz filet mignon and were really looking forward to it. When it came out, it was covered in some type of spice, both said it tasted like Old Bay seasoning. They both said it, too, was overwhelmingly salty. My husband who never leaves a bite of filet mignon behind, couldn't finish it, it was just too salty. I ordered the salmon, which was good but it was really tiny. Our check came to $199!! With the tip, the check came to $240. Our service was very good, the waiter was very attentive. The atmosphere is fine if you're there as a couple but it's really not for kids. I wouldn't go back. For $199, you can eat a few times at The Outback, and I'm positive they don't kill their filet mignon with overly salty seasonings. We were very disappointed - definitely NOT a $200 meal.

“A great wine event followed by a relaxing dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013 via mobile

We started our evening out on the patio with a wine tasting served with a variety of cheeses, fruit and bread. After that we headed inside to enjoy the Spanish Mackerel we caught during our fishing charter that the flying fish offered to cook for us. It was delivered "family style" several ways for the table to share. In addition to that we enjoyed the delicious soft shell crab, yellowfin tuna with crab meat, tuna bites étouffée, bbq chicken, and steak. Our waiter Albert was "top-notch" and extremely informative. It is great to see a staff that is truly devoted to the restaurant they work in. A truly enjoyable stop for people of all ages.
