“Great value and ambiance on the OBX”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

Under new management, we found our return visit (at least annual) very pleasant. This was our best OBX dinner experience this summer! The menu has an outstanding selection of fairly priced wines, fresh local fish and daily specials. Food preparation care was evident and the service was skilled and attentive. It was especially nice to find an OBX restaurant that was not noisy, accepted reservations and used fresh linens. A suitable location for romantic dinners and entertaining business clients.

“Best Restaurant in OBX”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Visiting from the Finger Lake region of NY, we have eaten here twice this week. When you make a reservation, ask for Albert as your server. His knowledge of the cuisine is unsurpassed! The seafood is local, fresh, and prepared exquisitely.Do not pass up a chance to dine at the Flying Fish Cafe!

“Most delicious cheesecake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

We picked Flying Fish from the Frommer’s guide to the Carolinas (remembering it wasn’t that long ago when all of our restaurant choices on a trip came from guide books…). Called just before to see if we needed to make a reservation for 6:30 pm (on a Tuesday evening) and were told that, in no uncertain terms, yes this is a restaurant where reservations would be necessary. When we arrived the place was about half full but quickly filled up while we were there. Most of the diners seemed to be couples, although there were a few small groups of 3-4 and at least one large group of 12 with teenaged children. The walls were decorated with somewhat marine themed paintings and some glass artwork in a kind of primitive psychedelic style, quite interesting. The tables all had heavy woven tablecloth with color fish patterns, however they were all covered over with white paper in true fish restaurant fashion. We sat at a spacious booth seat by the window, which was nice, because some of the other 2 person tables at the other end of the room seemed a bit too close together. I had a salad special of the days with grilled salmon, and my husband had the steak. I don’t think either of the dishes had the best presentation, however they were both quite tasty. For dessert, I had the day’s special cheesecake, with blueberry sauce, and it was the best cheesecake I had ever had in any restaurant. Service was also very good, friendly, attentive but not overbearing, and you were made to feel really at home. We chatted with our waiter a bit and found out that the place has just recently (in June) changed ownership, but all the staff remained so essentially there was no change especially for out-of-towners like us. Overall we were happy with our dinner, although the tab was a bit on the high side - $85 for two including drinks and tip, considering we each only had just a main dish. Then again that seemed to be the going rate for somewhat fancy restaurants in the OBX!

“Wonderful food and wonderful service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

This restaurant was fabulous. Another find from Tripadvisor for us on our Outer Banks vacation. It was out last night and we wanted to go somewhere nice. Our waiter was amazing and so helpful in sharing what was good on the menu. The food was delicious. Fresh and savory. I got a fish that melted in my mouth and my boyfriend got the lobster, which was fantastic. Highly recommend.

“Excellent food but pricey!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012 via mobile

We enjoyed reading all the reviews and decided to give it a try. The food is excellent but was surprised at the entree prices. The average entree price was $30. It was worth the money but wasn't expecting new York prices here
In the outer banks. Definitely give it a try as the sea scallops and crab cakes were delicious!!! Enjoy your dinner!
