After reading all the great reviews, we decided to try this place. Of course, we put a bit more weight in some reviews, those from our area (DC area) and bigger urban areas (NYC) over others (people with fewer or notoriously negative) contributions . However, I think after having said that, I think the thing you have to do, is see if the place caters to couple ambiance or family fun when sizing up the reviews. This is more a family place. We ordered the bruschetta and couldn't tell if it was butter or oil on the bread.... (Certainly not a great EVOO but didn't taste like butter either) But it totally lacked in spices and had no garlic. I had a salmon salad because there was no tuna steak salad and it was pretty good. The salmon didn't seem frozen and the mix of flavors (dressing, feta and great cherry tomatoes) made my lunch quite acceptable. My friend ordered a Big Kahuna burger which was acceptable, but the waiter didn't ask how he wanted it cooked. It came pretty well cooked through which we understand might actually be the requirement in NC. He also noted that the burger had so much on it that if hadn't asked them to leave off the mayo and mustard it would have been unbearably messy to eat. Oddly, as opposed to what most others wrote, our wait staff could have been more attentive. Never came by to see if the food was OK or fill sodas until we tracked him down. We were ready to ask another waitress if our waiter had gone off duty for some reason. (And who knows, maybe he had)
Anyway, if we want a burger at lunch again, we will pass up Kill Devil Grill (KDG) and instead go to Goombay's a few doors down. The fabric ceiling and art work is worth a visit alone. The food absolutely is hands down better - (for ex. same burger - much higher rating by my friend). So, I'd recommend KDG to a friend with kids, but with a caveat - reject tables by the bathrooms because flies are out of control there.
