“My kinda place!!”

This was another restaurant which Tripadivsor rated with high marks so we gave it a try.

The restaurant is located on the main beach road close to most hotels. The atmosphere is causal and the food is varied with a little of something for everyone. The Wood Roasted Chicken was excellent, the fresh catches and specials go early so if you arrive after 9 PM it may be too late.

Service is friendly and efficient. We enjoyed our meal and would return again. Price is right too. Go you'll be glad you did.

“Neutral after one lunch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2009

After reading all the great reviews, we decided to try this place. Of course, we put a bit more weight in some reviews, those from our area (DC area) and bigger urban areas (NYC) over others (people with fewer or notoriously negative) contributions . However, I think after having said that, I think the thing you have to do, is see if the place caters to couple ambiance or family fun when sizing up the reviews. This is more a family place. We ordered the bruschetta and couldn't tell if it was butter or oil on the bread.... (Certainly not a great EVOO but didn't taste like butter either) But it totally lacked in spices and had no garlic. I had a salmon salad because there was no tuna steak salad and it was pretty good. The salmon didn't seem frozen and the mix of flavors (dressing, feta and great cherry tomatoes) made my lunch quite acceptable. My friend ordered a Big Kahuna burger which was acceptable, but the waiter didn't ask how he wanted it cooked. It came pretty well cooked through which we understand might actually be the requirement in NC. He also noted that the burger had so much on it that if hadn't asked them to leave off the mayo and mustard it would have been unbearably messy to eat. Oddly, as opposed to what most others wrote, our wait staff could have been more attentive. Never came by to see if the food was OK or fill sodas until we tracked him down. We were ready to ask another waitress if our waiter had gone off duty for some reason. (And who knows, maybe he had)

Anyway, if we want a burger at lunch again, we will pass up Kill Devil Grill (KDG) and instead go to Goombay's a few doors down. The fabric ceiling and art work is worth a visit alone. The food absolutely is hands down better - (for ex. same burger - much higher rating by my friend). So, I'd recommend KDG to a friend with kids, but with a caveat - reject tables by the bathrooms because flies are out of control there.

My husband and I have been to many many fine restaurants and this was by far our favorite. After reading a review in a Nags head forum we tried the grill for lunch and dinner...because it was sooo great. The fish was extremely fresh...we had soft shell crabs...a shrimp dinner and hanger steak special over our visits...they were all cooked perfect. We particularly loved the spinach dip...something about it was sooo great and the pita/chips tasted like they were homemade. We also had the wings and the person that complained they were burnt ...cleary is eating at fridays and doesn't understand the term fire roasted...the sauce is surprisingly great...and I would agree at first they don't look appetizing..but were amazing..and totally juicy. I can't leave out the best....KEY LIME PIE....I would drive back down there just to eat ..no wonder it one awards....we first shared it ....at lunch but dinner...I had to put my foot down and inform my husband that I wasn't sharing..it was worth the extra calories.
One note...we went on a wednesday for lunch and bottles of wine are 1/2 price...we tried a local vinyard very good.....and soo cheap like 12 bucks with the special.. The service was amazing the girls all work together and the hostess while it was her first week...she remembered us by name on our second visit...I commend her manager for picking such a friendly face...and again the staff couldn't do a enough..even the bar tender would run down and deliver drinks to help out....Its a must try....and the prices are v ery reasonable especially compared to I think other places down there.

“Our new favorite place”

We go to the Outer Banks every year for a week, and we like having a trusted, family place we can go to without worry. Out new place is KDG.

We went for lunch 2 times (next year dinner!) and enjoyed it greatly. I agree with some other reviews, get their early enough for their specials, as they are excellent.

We love the kids menu too! Not many places have seafood one the kids menu, and my kids are sick of getting chicken fingers at every place they go. Here they had popcorn shrimp, and fish sticks...per my kids...yum. And the kids meal comes with icecream, yum, yum!

Our party of 6 (2 kids) enjoyed every dish for the 2 times we were there. The soft shell crab sandwich was great! And for the desserts, wow! $5 will get you more dessert than you can eat. They are 2 person portions...that's $2.50 each, best deal anywhere.

So, if you're looking for a real good family place, that has local seafood, at moderate prices, KDG is for you.

“Save your money!!! Horrible!!”

Worst $160 I ever spent on my family of 6. Asked for medium and got well done tuna steak. Bruschetta bread was covered in butter...who does that to bruschetta?!?!? Chicken wing appetizers were burnt. Menu claims 'no filler' crab cakes...HAHA...you should have seen these things. My financee's one cake had 3 pieces of crab! 3!!!!!!! Seriously, I have a question for all the people who rated this 4 or 5. Why do you think this is good? Do you eat all your meals at McDonalds and Wendys? Then, YES, this is the best food ever. I was there at 5 and it was not even busy yet so you can't blame an overworked kitchen for the crappy food. I've been using Tripadvisor for restaurants lately when I take vacations and I've come to realize the people on here love horrible fatty food. Save your $160 and go buy some fresh seafood at any of the stands in Outer banks....grill it, bake it, broil it....throw some herbs, salt/pepper and lemon zest on top.
