“Unimpressed...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

We looked at reviews on Tripadvisor, which were fairly positive, before making reservations. Trust me, the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. We paid extra for a suite and it ended up being a regular sized room with no partition. Our bed was a few feet away from the kitchen - the front desk worker called it "open concept" when we asked if we were given the wrong room. Also, the furniture was chipped, carpet was dirty, bed was poor quality, and the room had a stale smell. You can do better!

We appreciate your taking the time to write a review of your stay. As mentioned in other responses, our suites are all 1 large room without separation between the kitchen and bedroom area. These rooms are double the size of our standard rooms which are smaller in size. However, as mentioned in previous responses, our structure was orginially built in the 1940s. So the rooms are smaller in size than those of a new build today and our suites (the kitchens were added at a later date) are a bit bigger than a "normal" sized hotel room of today. We are actually in the middle of having carpets cleaned now. We have already cleaned quite a few and are still in the process of cleaning now. We do clean our carpets (the whole hotel) quite a few times a year--I don't offer that as an excuse but just for everyone's general information. I am sorry that your stay was not as expected and hope that you are able to come visit the Outer Banks again another time. We thank you for staying with us, Tonia.

This hotel has a cute vintage charm but the rooms are extremely small- in the double room the door literally smacked into the bed every time you walked in. A major downside for our family was that there is NO handicap access. For anyone with any ambulation problems (walker, crutches, cane, especially wheelchair) this is NOT the hotel for you- there are steps everywhere and not a single ramp. Plus the rooms are so small you can not maneuver an assitive device around safely.

We appreciate your staying with us during your recent stay on the Outer Banks. I'm happy that you enjoyed the charm of our property. You are correct in that all the standard rooms (rooms with 2 double beds, 1 queen bed or 1 king bed without a view) are of a smaller size than most find today in newer built properties because as the longest, continuous-running hotel on the Outer Banks--our property was built during a time when people didn't make rooms at the beach of a large size. The suites that were added as well as the dunefront and oceanview rooms are the largest sized rooms we have available. The suites, especially the ones on the first floor, or the dunefront rooms (all located on the first floor) will afford most people who have mobility issues rooms where there would not be problems with space. These rooms also have outside entrances with just a step up out of the parking area and or another step into the room. We do hope that you enjoyed visit the Outer Banks and hope you will return again! Thank you, Tonia
