Let me preface this review by saying I frequently travel to OBX on short family getaways and have stayed at many hotels in the area. I am also an admitted germaphobe who is a stickler for a clean place to stay.
Certain people have panned this hotel, but I truly say it is not half as bad as I expected. There were both pros and cons that should be addressed.
To begin, the room was of average size, typical of any hotel in the area. The room did have a strong pungent odor, but as suggested, it is probably typical for a hotel of its age and location. However, the bathroom and bed area was clean. NO complaints on the comfort of the bed. Anyone knit-picking about the linens or pillows should realize this is not the RITZ and should be willing to shell out more money on four-star accommodations with $$$$ rates. Quality Inn is a budget hotel with basic features, and this room was EXACTLY that. To address the pool...some people complain about the small area, but when you are at the beach, you should not be spending a great deal of time at the pool anyway. If this is the case, visit a waterpark/resort instead of a beach town. The carpets were a bit stained, but no worse than any other hotel in town. I NEVER walk barefoot in any hotel because I know the floors are probably dirty. The outdoor walkway and steps were stained, but it is important to realize, they are made of concrete......yes they should be power washed more frequently, but if guests were not such pigs, this would not be a problem. The paint does seem to be peeling, but it is very difficult to fix during peak summer season. The a/c unit was my biggest complaint. Even though it was not loud, it ran all the time and was very difficult to program.
We were given a 3rd floor room, so there was little noise. Due to the many breakfast places in the OBX, we did not try the breakfast, but it did smell good as we passed by.
Also, when people complain about the prices, I paid no more for this than any hotel in the area. After all, it is a MAJOR tourist destination, and prices reflect this point. Of course no hotel is worth the rates, but is there really any other alternative besides renting a house for the week?
All in all, the Quality Inn was an average hotel....not perfect, but certainly FAR from the worst place around. The location was great and I would consider staying again. Do not be scared away by all the negativity....our stay was completely satisfactory.
