“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2014

We stayed there a week. One of the best places I have ever stayed. Great for families. Right on the beach with their own access and free laundry room which is a plus. I would stay here again in a heart beat. Already booking for next year.

We are currently staying at the Golden Strand and are very satisfied. The rooms are clean, newly refurbished and well supplied. The office closes early but they have a pick up box with all info needed. It is centrally located in the Outer Banks and there is a lot to see and do. It is right down the road from nth Wright Brothers monument and we enjoyed the lights at night. We got to see dolphins from our balcony. The condo has everything you should need, just buy groceries and enjoy your week.

Room Tip: We ask if we could get an ocean view and they were full but gave us a partial view. It was great an...

Recently remodeled room and a fresh coat of paint add in a beautiful view and the convenience of being right on the beach made this the perfect place for me and my wife.Went out no more than 50 feet down the beach and found really nice shells, big and small. They have painters working hard to put a fresh coat of paint on the outside and we stopped and talked to one of the workers who was real friendly and helpful telling us about some of the things in the area we didn't know. Couldn't ask for much more,a great place to stay!!!!

My wife and I stayed at this property for a week recently when we were on vacation. We found everything extremely satisfactory. The office was closed when we arrived, but room keys and directions were awaiting us in a little box by the office door. Indeed, check-in and check-out procedures are very simple. The apartment was extremely spacious. spotless and very well furnished. There were two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a bar area, a living room, a dining area, a fully equipped and modern kitchen, and a balcony that overlooked a beach on the Atlantic. The place was very quiet, and we enjoyed total privacy, the beds were comfortable, towels in the bathrooms plentiful and luxuriant, and there was nothing one could desire that the kitchen did not have. The color scheme of the apartment was muted and in keeping with the colors of the sandy beach, the tasteful pictures on the walls dealt with pleasant marine scenes, and the design of the upholstery on the sofa recalled sea shells. Altogether, everything was in harmony with the environment. Free Wi-Fi was available, though the signal was somewhat spotty. My wife was able to use her computer for the Internet, but I could not access email on my iPhone. We had a wonderful time and were very happy with the apartment indeed.
One of the nicest features of this property, we found, was that staying there gives one free membership of a nearby gym which is remarkably well equipped, open for long hours, and has a great variety of modern and up to date equipment. During our stay we enjoyed working out at the gym several mornings.
So why am I giving the property only four or at best four and a half stars instead of five? The property is old, and though the rooms have been recently renovated splendidly, the outside of the property still looks rather grungy and decrepit. True, management are working on it. Even while we were there, a ripped carpet on the stairs was fixed and some of the external appearance spruced up. But there is still quite a long way to go. The locks on the doors are still the old-fashioned type. You have to use turnkeys to open them, and some of them can be temperamental. It would help to have a little map of the property given to the guests so that those checking in know exactly where their apartments are located in the complex. We had to wander up and down before we found ours. A map would also indicate where the elevator is located. As it happens, we never found it and had to lug our stuff up and down 29 fairly steep steps. A series of nor'easters damaged the dunes that line the beach, rendering it impossible to access it from the hotel. Work is on to restore them and re-open the access, but in the meanwhile we could reach the beach directly outside our apartment only by a roundabout route. We also found the management somewhat elusive. When the beach access is re-opened and the property has been spruced and given a new appearance, it will be fully deserving of five stars.

Room Tip: Not all rooms face the ocean. Ask for one that does.

We had an oceanfront 2 bedroom unit on 2nd floor (1st floor has no living space). The beach dune started 6 feet from our balcony and water at high tide was less than 75 feet away. When there were heavy seas, the sound made it almost too loud to leave windows open!! We loved the location. While mostly cloudy during our stay, we still enjoyed the ocean view
especially sunrise and sunset on the clear days....spectacular as you can see from photos.

The location made it easy to explore the Outer Banks. We especially enjoyed the Jazz Festival in Duck and the lighthouses as well as Ocracoke.

Resort:
Definitely not fancy and a little weathered due to location on the beach. Exterior painting was to start right after we left. There was an elevator with 6 or so carts available to help with luggage. Exterior pool and playground and plenty of parking. Check in was very quick....office closed at 5pm on Saturday with check in keys and papers left in outside box for late arrivals.
Free Wi-Fi speed about 2-3 Mbps. Free washers and dryers on the 1st floor.

Kitchen:
Large and well stocked with plenty of extra cabinet space for storage. Appliances worked well. Very clean as was the entire unit.

Bathrooms:
Rather small compared to some resorts but we preferred that over large baths in some resorts that reduce living space. Towels were very thick. Bath/shower combos in both baths.

Living area:
Spacious with good furniture. Decor was basic with blinds instead of curtains. Furniture was good quality but not fancy.

Bedrooms:
The basic decor continued into the bedrooms with a queen in one and twin beds in the other. Plenty of extra blankets and linens. Beds were pretty firm.

There was a flat screen TV in the Living area and one in the master bedroom. Plenty of channels. The unit also had a dvd player and small stereo

One feature we really enjoyed was a louvered exterior door (instead of a screen door) outside the entrance door which allowed us to open the windows facing the ocean and haver a breeze through the unit and still have our privacy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return. Being so close to the ocean meant more to us than a highly decorated unit.

My family loved our stay at the Golden Strand. Great location, nestled between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. Wonderful ocean front location, just steps to the beach. Our condo was spotless when we arrived and was very well maintained. We did have an issue with our AC but they fixed it quickly. Great water pressure in the shower. Pool was wonderful. Laundry on site. Only complaint would be that the kitchen wasn't as well stocked with utensils and appliances and I would have liked (measuring cups, spoons, plastic containers for storage.) Would stay here again!

Best things about resort
Plenty of room in two bedroom condo right on the beach with most of the rooms oceanfront. At first, we were disappointed that we were in unit B1, one row back on the side, first floor. That proved to be a non-issue as we were high off the ground and still had an ocean view from our balcony. The unit was very well-equipped with kitchen items with lots of counter space for food preparation. The extra blankets and towels in the linen closets were much appreciated as was the more than adequate closet space. The use of the free laundry room was great. We enjoyed daily walks up and down the beach and beautiful morning sunrises. The beach right in front of the condos was a bit narrow but walking a couple of minutes in either direction gets you a wider beach. We were there in September so beaches not crowded but occupied with people swimming, reading, fishing, walking.

Best attractions or restaurants nearby
The Grand Strand is in an excellent location to take in both the northern and southern outer banks. We traveled to Corolla a couple of days. Took the Bob's Wild Horse tour which was lots of fun. Visited the Currituck Lighthouse, small heritage village, wildlife exhibits, etc. We went south a couple of days to Hatteras Island and visited Bodie Lighthouse, Pea Island Refuge, Graveyard of the Atlantic - all worthwhile. We also spent a day on Roanoke Island visiting the lovely Elizabethan Gardens and the Roanoke first settlement. Just down the road from the resort we visited the Wright Brothers Memorial, hiked the Jockey's Ridge Dune, and hiked the trails in Nagshead Woods. We had a wonderful birthday meal at the Flying Fish Cafe which was perfect for a special night out. We had a more casual meal at Goombay's Grill right across the street from our resort and were pleasantly surprised at the appealing menu selection and the quality of our meals.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at The Grand Strand. We would go again and would recommend to others. The unit we stayed in was very well equipped, very central to site seeing, and we enjoyed staying right on the beach.
