“Gone to pot”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

I've stayed at the Highlander several times over the years, and it has been clean, quiet and well run. Last week my wife and I checked in for two nights. A crowd of teens/young adults were gathered around several rooms, several with guitars, smoking and making loud phone calls. They came and went into the evening. The next afternoon when, after shopping and sight seeing, we went to the room for a rest, the crowd of youth were extra loud, even setting up a full drum kit and making lots of noise. They seemed to have taken over the entire motel. My wife went to the office to speak with the manager about the noise. A man in a room off the office shouted out that it was clear my wife did not like music and he did not want her in his hotel. We were told to leave. Turns out some of the youth are the children of the motel manager, and they appear to occupy (with friends) several rooms. It is no longer a clean, quiet place to vacation.

Our stay at the Highlander was paid for by a music festival that we were playing (we are musicians) and this was our second time there. It's an old-school family-run small motel that evidently hasn't changed in some years. But, clean, quiet, and with great views of the surrounding mountains and Christmas tree farms, a nice getaway indeed. Highly recommended for anyone trying to escape the world of chain motels. This is a small American motel the way they all used to be.

This is a small family owned motel. It has a wonderful view of Mt Jefferson in North Carolina.

The room was clean and had no evidence of pests. There are no amenities ( no hairdryer, iron ,etc. ) I would best describe it as quaint. Our room had two double beds-dresser, microwave, a small television with cable. Three of the walls were knotty pine panelling. It had wonderful hot water and a reasonable sized bathroom.

Both beds probably need new mattresses-but we slept ok .

There was a small deck at the front the motel that looked out on the mountain, fields and highway 16. But the picnic table should be replaced as it has seen better days.

This motel was a good location for easy convience to many of the local attractions. It is less than 3 miles to many places including a Hardees, and Food Lion.

The price was right. < $60.00 per night.

The only real complaint was -all night long the unit next to us had people going in and out and every time the door opened we could hear it. The sound carried .

  • Liked — The price and location
  • Disliked — The noisy neighbors who stayed up all night and went in and out of their room until 3: am
