The short hike from the parking area to the top of Max Patch is so worth the reward of the incredible 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. You can even take a short hike on the Appalachian Trail if you like. No trees so be careful in the heat of the summer, but early morning sunrises or evening sunsets can be awesome, even spiritual, especially if nobody else is around. If you love the mountains and don't mind a little exercise, I highly recommend a visit to Max Patch.

We took a day trip to Max Patch only hearing about it through the trip advisor recommendation printed here. The directions to Max Patch were pretty good and the magnificent panoramic 360 degree view of Max Patch can't be described only experienced. A couple things to know before hand. There are NO BATHROOMS and No DRINKING FOUNTAINS. The hike to the "Summit" is grass covered and gradual and should be done to get the best views. For the return trip home we decided to take the "shorter" more direct route given on trip advisor. It should be explained to those not from the area that you start out in asheville with the directions given and upon taking the shorter return version to I-40 you end up at exit # 7 which is closer to Tennesee and the Smokies approx. 40 miles from Asheville. So we had to head back to Asheville on I-40 East and there was a 30 MINUTE TRAFFIC DELAY due to lane closures so I'm not so sure it was any shorter. Knowing this we would've made different accomodations for the night so I think it's very important to print for those unfamiliar with the area.
