We had a memorable time at the STF Saxnäsgarden Hotell. Modest price, huge room, largest bath ever, Super kitchen/sitting room, TV in room. Absolutely amazing perfect service from the staff, Helped us in every way they could to enjoy our stay without our own transportation.
Great food and super breakfast buffet in restaurant with panorama window front on lake. Spotlessly clean.
We can only recommend this place, You should bring a car for trip up here and for excursions to Fatmomakke and Wilderness road. Canoe rental available.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2011

We stayed here one night on our journey back down from Jokkmokk, we wanted to drive some of the Wilderness road and this was advertised in the Rough guide as a spa complex, with a lovely pool etc

When we arrived it looked quite large, a more modern building, but the area did not feel quite so wild as we'd expected anyway, the wilderness road was one of the least wild roads we've driven on during our trip through Sweden and Norway - we only drive the middle part as on the way north we drove straight from Stromsund through Vilhelmina to Jokkmokk but I had predicted this would be the most 'wild' part.

As per the previous review my husband had to find someone to check in, when he did we were given a room on a high floor, as there was no real view we asked for a lower floor so that we could get wifi, it worked a little on the second floor.

All of the hotel is single beds, there are no doubles. The fridge in the room smelt and we did not use it, the TV hung from the ceiling and my husband bumped his head on it! The bathroom was clean but as per the rest of the hotel, it had a feel of hospital about it, I also noticed an emergency cord tied up above the shower. (I have worked in a hospital the last 2 years). On investigating the 'spa' area - there was no info in English and no one to ask, we came across a door leading to a corridor down which what looked like a physiotherapist helping a man with a walking frame - the hospital theme continued - it actually started when we first got in the lift and my husband pointed out how much it felt like a hospital lift - when we found the pool it looked like the rehab pool down our local district general!! There was no one around and what looked like the changing rooms were locked. We also found a sports hall and gym area.

When we went for dinner, it looked like a buffet but the 'waitress' showed us where to sit and said she would come back to explain the menu in English (we probably could have figured it out but she didn't give it to us) 5-10 minutes later, I went and found her and said we'd happily just have the buffet. She seemed to be the only waitress for a hall full of coach parties!

The buffet was very poor, minimal choice and ran out quickly, the chicken skewers were like rubber and worryingly warm to cold! The fruit juice tasted like squash. This was the same story in the morning for breakfast - the buffet choice was a bit better but by no way was it up to the standard of the other (similarly priced) hotels we stayed in during our trip.

I would not advise to stay here and would not stay here again, I can't often say this about hotels we stay at but it really was poor and not cheap either!

We were in Sweden driving to the Arctic Circle. As part of that journey, we left the Inlandvagen to drive the Wilderness Road from Stromsund to Vilhelmina. Since we had heard a lot about the scenic beauty of this area, we wanted to break up the trip and spend a night along the way. There were not a lot of choices. Saxnasgarden suited our needs.
This is quite a modern complex that includes cabins and a hostel in addition to the hotel itself. It is definitely in the wilderness and the surroundings are amazingly beautiful.
There were a few quirks. First, when we arrived a little before 6, we had to hunt down someone to check us in. They merely handed us a key and told us how to get to our room. The desk was only open from 10-5. For any needs outside that time, check with the restaurant. The WiFi, which was free, did not work upstairs. We were able to get it to work in the lobby and there were computers available for guest use.
The restaurant, which pretty much has a captive audience because of location, was ok. The buffet for 165 SEK was limited but far less costly than the a la carte items on the menu. The glorious view from the window easily distracted you from your meal which was adequate. The breakfast buffet, as it has been in all the Swedish hotels we have visited, was excellent. There is something for everyone.
We ended up checking out in the restaurant. The desk wasn't open yet. Were we to be back in the area, we would probably stay here again but would look into either a package deal or the hostel which had a lot of double rooms. This was the most expensive hotel on our trip at 1100 SEK. It was not the best value but how can you put a price on the view from our bed?
