“Wonderful base of operations for a visit to the Highlands area”

I can't say enough good things about this place. I was traveling with a small group. We had planned to go hiking after checking in at the Inn, but, once we got there, we all said 'let's stay here' and spent the evening hanging out on the deck, sipping wine and relaxing with Helene. Helene and Rick did everything they could to make us feel welcome and comfortable -- front door unlocked, fresh oatmeal and raisin gingersnaps, complementary wine and snacks, help-yourself kitchen and drink center, a fresh pot of decaf when we got back from dinner in town (the gingersnaps were worth a night at the inn all by themselves). Breakfast was hearty and delicious. The inn has that old house charm, but it was modern and spotless when it came to beds and rest rooms. Simply one of the best, most comfortable, and most welcoming places I have ever stayed.

Room Tip: The best rooms were on the first floor, because they had private doors onto the wrap-around porch, w...

What a wonderful place to relax! It was our anniversary, and Rick and Helene made it so special! They left us a bottle of champagne in our room, which was so comfortable and beautifully decorated. It was also very clean, and we were right by the hot tub. The grounds are so well kept, the food was delicious-- and Helene gave me recipes for the foods she made! Appetizers, wine, cookies, more! What a great place to come relax and unwind. You will feel so welcomed. It was such a treat, and we will be going back! I see why they have such high ratings.

Room Tip: We were in room 10, which is right by the hot tub.

The 4 1/2 street Inn is a special, welcoming place. Its gifted innkeepers, Rick and Helene, and their black lab Jake, help you feel at home right away. The inn is beautiful and our room was gorgeously appointed with beautiful views (we were on the top floor). Breakfast was incredible - especially Helene's homemade granola. The grounds were so peaceful and close to the action of Highlands but also very quiet for peace of mind. I spent time on the porch writing and listening to the birds for one morning and the time was rejuvenating. Finally, I really liked Helene's dinner recommendations - I'd tell her what I was looking for and she'd help me connect. Plus local restaurants seemed to really like Helene and Rick and when their names were mentioned we perceived that we got seats right away if they were available. Truly a beautiful place filled with warmth and hospitality!

We just drove home from Highlands, NC where we spent a few days with Helene and Rick at their wonderful Inn. It was more than we had expected and never before have we gotten such a large, home made, delicious breakfasts. WOW! What a treat each morning! It is a popular place, you will understand after you stay there, so make your reservations early. You won't be sorry.

Leave the cares of this world behind and allow yourself the opportunity to relax in this refreshing, peaceful and beautiful place for nature lovers. From the tea and cookies when we first arrived to the yummy appetizers and wine on the back patio that we enjoyed with Helena, to dinner at Cyprus in Highlands, to our cozy room on the 3rd floor, to the large and delicious breakfast with more interesting conversation with Rick and Helena this was a weekend to remember. We felt so "at home" and "welcomed", we even got to take Jake their dog for a walk around the beautiful neighborhood! This is a fabulous getaway location with amazing waterfalls within minutes! And Highlands is a beautiful town.

Room Tip: The third floor room is extra sunny :)

We had a tremendous time at the Inn. Helene and Rick are super hosts. Clean, great breakfast and they tell you all the good places to go. We Hiked Whiteside Mountain and had a great lunch at Cornucopia in Cashiers.

Can't wait to go back.

We love their dog Jake!

Room Tip: We were in room 2 which was great nice porch to sit outside and have a class of Vino.

This was our second trip to the 4-1/2 St. Inn in Highlands, NC. Each time we have enjoyed the character and ambiance of a really neat old home that is within walking distance of the quaint
Highlands downtown, yet set far enough away to be quiet and restful. The grounds are beautiful with porches and decks to enjoy the large trees and garden areas. Your hosts, Rick and Helene, couldn't be more accommodating. They started a nice fire for us in the fireplace upon our arrival, and served wine and hors d'oeuvres (including a delicious raspberry compote!) in their beautiful sitting room. The big black lab, Jake, made us feel right at home as well, as he respectfully eyed the treats laid out for us, yet left them just for our pleasure!
Helene is a fabulous cook, and the breakfasts were exceptional. When we wanted to dine out, they had plenty of suggestions for us as well. Our room, on the ground floor at the front of the house was quiet and charming with a huge bath and walk in shower. We love to visit Highlands, where at 4000 ft., the air is always cooler and the little town quieter than our South Carolina residence in Greenville. Highlands is one of the most charming little towns in Western NC and you just can't beat the 4-1/2 St. Inn if you choose to visit there!
