“Adorable and clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2009

This is our 4th stay at the Main Street Inn right in downtown Highlands, NC. It is such a cute place, extremely clean, and the rooms are comfortable and clean. They even have a wonderful restaurant on sight and we had a great dinner there. The only downfall is there is no elevator so if you book a room on the 2nd floor, you will walk up stairs.

We reserved most of the main house for our extended family during our daughter's wedding weekend, and it was the perfect location for us. The breakfasts were wonderful (especially the biscuits!), and the innkeepers and staff were extremely responsive to our every request. The Inn was a great place for our family to be together--it has comfortable and attractive rooms, a sitting room with fireplace, and a cozy bar--and it was convenient to all the wedding weekend venues. Everyone in the family agreed the Main Street Inn was great, and we hope to return soon. Hats off to Gary, Debbie, and the staff for making our stay most enjoyable!

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel primarily because the owners were so accommodating, helpful and warm. I would stay again solely because of them. As for the hotel, the room was quaint, albeit a little small. The hotel is at the end of the main stretch, but is within easy walking distance of everything (the main road is probably about three or four blocks long, so the hotel is still close to everything).

First and foremost if I were to rate my initial phone conversation from 1 to 10 with 10 being the friendliest I would have to say it would have been a 4 or 5 and that remained to be true throughout my visit at the Main street Inn. I guess this should have been a warning sign but one we have never stayed at a B&B and they did offer a one night stay and a second night at half price, my thought was to see how the first night went and go from that experience. There are rooms in a separate building that are not part of the main building this is where we found ourselves on the first floor right next to a busy street and across the street from the police and fire station. The room was quaint but small and the road noise was an issue the water ran brown when initially turned on for the first time as though it had not been used in a while.

Please understand we are usually at Hampton or other inns and this was a chance for a change of scenery, but when my wife got up at around 4:00am to use the bathroom and found the spider on the wall that sealed the fate of us trying a second night and probably ever seeing the inside of a B&B in this lifetime.

The inn is still lovely, and the staff are friendly and helpful, but can be scarce at times.
Lunch was delicious and service was great. However, breakfast was very disappointing. The coffee was weak and flavorless, and hot food selection and quality is way down from a couple of years ago. The kitchen staff was untrained and a bit sloppy. Both mornings we had to pop our heads into the kitchen and beg for biscuits - the basket was always empty, and we only managed to get one, very tiny biscuit each morning. We stayed on the second floor, and the music coming from the two speakers in the hall could be heard in our room with the door closed. It's hard to relax with noisy singing. I think soft, insrumental music, turned down a little, would be better. What could be a beautiful little courtyard sitting area looked abandoned, with plastic molded chairs stacked uner a tree and the umbrellas closed shut - very unwelcoming. Stayed that way all day the first day, even though weather was nice. Needs improvement - not what it used to be, and not what you'd expect for about $175 a night.

This is the place to stay in Highlands. It is located in the center of town but still enough off the beaten path to minimize traffic and tourist noise. The staff was friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. I loved our room; it had a balcony! They even have a lovely room service option that involves wine and cheese. If the purpose of your trip is to relax and rejuvenate, then this is the place to stay.

The Main Street Inn is truly a relaxing place to get away for a weekend. My husband and I went to celebrate our anniversary and had an absolutely wonderful stay. The innkeeper and staff are simply wonderful. Everything from the food to our room was perfect.
