“We had a blast digging for buried treasure.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

My wife and I arrived about 10 AM on Wednesday. No one else was there other than the owner. She quickly had us set up at the covered flume with screens, brushes, trowels and buckets. She gave us very clear instructions on what to do and what we should be looking for. We took our time and went through six buckets of dirt in 5 hours. We were joined by a group of four after the first hour and shortly after lunch time, there were about 25 of us "mining." Popsicles were offered in the morning and the afternoon to everyone. Restrooms are available on site and playground equipment is also available for small children who become bored. We were told that the busiest days are Friday's and Mondays. They told us that they are one of two local mining operations that own their own mines. The other mines around Franklin enhance their buckets and don't use native stones.

This is a family-owned business and someone was always checking with us to see what we had found or if we needed anything. Water and drinks are available as well as some snacks. They helped us to identify what we had found or told us that it had no value. When you finish, they will go through your finds and identify them for you.

You pay $5 per bucket that you dig or you can opt for specialty buckets enriched with sapphires, rubies, or garnets. They run $20 per bucket. Enhanced buckets are also available for $10 through $300. The enhanced buckets contain brightly colored rocks and minerals from all around the world. Some will contain geodes, clear quartz crystals, and amethysts. The $100 buckets appear to be 5 gallon buckets filled with dirt and many large rocks of different colors are visible. Enhanced buckets are great for small children as the rocks are much larger and easier for them to find.

After going through three buckets, I had found 45 garnets, one sapphire, two twelve-sided garnets, some peach moonstone, and several pieces of rose quartz. All-in-all we had a very enjoyable day and look forward to coming back.

“Camper @ Rose Creek Campground next to the mine.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Tom and Linda along with their son own the mine and are great people. They have actual soil from their state licensed mine just up the mountain along with salted soil also. Both of my sons left with very nice finds from the unsalted soil. I can promise that if you have a yearning to find a treasure and you are in the Franklin area of NC, whether you are young or old, be sure to visit this mine first; it will spoil you for all of the rest.

“What a blast!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

We just got back from a long weekend in Franklin, NC, where we met family and camped at Rose Creek Campground (separate review). The mine is located within the campground, so we strolled over, bought 10 buckets for $45 and a seeded bucket for my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. The teenagers loved it, the 'elders' loved it, the kids loved it. We all found some great stuff (garnet, rubies, sapphire, citrine, amethyst, emerald, old Indian Pottery!), but the best was my granddaughter who squealed and jumped around for 5 minutes over the huge translucent green stone found in her bucket. That 5 minutes was worth the entire trip. My teenage nephew actually wanted to skip whitewater rafting to go mine some more. Something fun to do for everyone in the family.

The staff were so nice and patient with us, the facilities were clean. We will defnitely go back next time. We've got the mining bug now. Photos to follow.

“Great Dirty Fun!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

Took my two children to Rose Creek Mine after a very rainy 4th of July weekend. I think the flume was muddier than normal due to all the rain, but the kids had a great time. Paid $15.00 for 3 buckets of native ore and we found moonstone, amethyst, rubies, sapphires, lots of garnet and citrine. Would definitely go back and if we would have had more time, we definitely would have refilled our buckets. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable! The bathrooms were a bit dirty, but again it could have been due to all the wet weather. All in all, kids had a great time and it was a well spent 2 hour activity.

“Fun day with the grandkids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

My wife and I gave the grandkids (7 and 11) a choice of activities for the day and they chose gem mining. We looked at several of the local mines on the internet and selected Rose Creek for the day. The mine was easy to find with very visible signs at each intersection.

Upon arrival at about noon, we paid the admission ($10) for the two adults which includes 2 buckets per admission. The children are permitted to help the adults with the mining. Ore is excavated from the mine and is stockpiled in a shed. The miners must go to the shed and select the ore to be screened at the flume.

We spent about 3 hours at the mine and went through 14 buckets of ore. The kids had a blast going through the ore and hoping to make their fortune. They were enthusiastic the entire time we were there. We ended up with small sapphires, rubies, garnets, moonstones, and different types of quartz. My wife found a very nice amethyst and a nice garnet.

The staff were very attentive and helpful throughout the day, periodically offering popsicles to the kids. At the end of our mining, the staff helped sort through the stones, separated them, and put them in labeled bags. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Salted buckets are available, but we opted for the native ore to better experience true mining. Plan to spend about an hour per bucket.

When asked if they would like to do this again, the kids both gave an enthusiastic yes.
