“Lovely Thanksgiving retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We got a deal on the room in the lodge for Thanksgiving - 2 night stay. Room is just fine but there is no microwave or refrigerator. Did not need one as it was very chilly. Wonderful to wake up to snow in the morning and light snow all day. Friday there was a nice bonfire with marshmallows to roast and on Thurs a hayride around the complex. The room was nice with a comfortable bed but you have to watch if you are at the sink and someone is in the bathroom. You open the door most carefully. The lobby fireplace is nice and there is an abundance of seating and tables to read, play cards or just relax. Dinner was a buffet and the food was good and service excellent. (we have been here when the food and service was not good) All in all, a real treat!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are so happy that you chose to stay with us for your Thanksgiving Holiday. The snow was definitely a beautiful treat for us all! We are happy that you enjoyed it as much as we did. The fireplace is a wonderful place to relax and read a book, knit, or to just chat with family and friends. We hope that you will visit us again very soon!

We went for one night to the Fontana Village Resort. We were surprised by how much it includes with a large lodge, restaurant, a couple stores and a timeshare community of individual cottages. At the beginning of December it was quiet quiet quiet. We took a very nice walk bordering Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Joyce Kilmer Forest is nearby with nmore trees than Kilmer could write about. There are no towns nearby. The very large Fontana Dam is close to the resort as are Fontana Lake, Nantahala National Forest, Cherokee National Forest, and the Little Tennessee River. Rooms are fine, most with pleasant views. The Lodge was built in 1975 and looks it with small bathrooms, weak WIFI in the guest room, outdated HVAC but it is great for its type of place.

December can be very quiet here, but it is the perfect time to get some rest and relaxation! We hope that you enjoyed the nearby area attractions as well. Another great time with my family at the resort for Thanksgiving week! Weather was great, even got a little snow on Thanksgiving. As usual great activities planned and we had lots of fun. JP and his mom are great people, they really show that they care and truly try and make you feel like you are family there. The resort general manager Jeanie was at some of the activities and she is very nice and helpful. There are a few "changes" that I am not happy about though from the last time we visited. First, no more free coffee in the lobby! That was a great feature of the resort/lobby, was convienent and nice to have there. The in-room coffee makers are a waste, too small, takes too much time to make coffee when there are a bunch of things to do and see. Hopefully that will change in the near future. Second, during the camp fires at the fire pits, they used to provide at no charge, marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers for making smores...only marshmallows this year that were eaten up pretty quickly the first nights fire. Just seems silly to me to not provide a few more items that really don't cost all that much! Also what is frustrating is the fact that during a planned busy week like Thanksgiving there is a activities schedule laid out already in advance. Unfortunately during the week the schedule keeps changing and there is no consistency. The printed out schedules at the front desk say one thing, online on their website says something different, the general store has a dry erase board and that says something different, and then during activities they make announcements of changes to activities or something different. It makes it hard if you plan your day and the activities keeps changing and you are not sure which ones are correct. Just seems like a little organization is needed...and this is not coming from JP, he seems like he does the best he can do and is very accommodating to all the guests. He is a great asset to Fontana and he needs to be taken care of since a lot of people love seeing him and talking with him when they come! Despite the few changes/things we are not happy about, we had a great time. So relaxing in a beautiful very remote area. Internet/wireless connectivity was much improved from last time, huge noticeable difference. Cell service for AT&T is non-existant, but I don't really care. I am there to relax and have a great time, not make phone calls. Tina at the general store is another great asset, very friendly and helpful. Laurie at the Pit Stop is also another great asset to Fontana. It is nice to see the same employees each time, makes you feel like family and at home.

We stayed in the lodge and the rooms are very well kept and maintained. The bathrooms could use updating, but they are clean and nice. The maids do a great job at cleaning and taking care of the guests.

Keep up the good work Fontana and hopefully these small "cuts/changes" are for a much larger plan to renovate/add things in the near future!

Room Tip: Lodge rooms on the back side of the main lodge facing the pool have very nice pools...although the f...

My boyfriend and I went to Fontana Village this past Thanksgiving holiday for 4 days and was very pleased with everything about the stay. The Village is set in a beautiful mountainside setting and we stayed in the main lodge. The place is little outdated and worn but I feel adds to the beauty of the place. The room was most comfortable except for the noisy heater/air conditioning unit in the wall. There were many activities to choose from during our stay which was facilitated by JP which did a fantastic job. We partook in just a few since we wanted to explore the neighboring area. Loved listening to local musician and story teller, Randy Flack in Main Lodge. All the staff; especially the dining staff were as nice as can be and food in the dining room was pretty good as well. Only suggestion would be to offer different menus on different days in place of just the same one. Definitely would recommend and will come back. Its everything I would expect in a mountainside lodge.

Love the quiet resort where you can completely relax. For the kids, the small lazy river is great. Wish there were a hot tub where that pool is though. We stay in cabins and they are wonderful. The food is excellent. Tubing on the lake is a blast. What a gorgeous lake!

Down side: Golf carts are broken often. They barely can make it up a hill. The putt putt is pretty run down with weeds growing all over. Game room is pretty outdated.

Our kids (ages 6, 11, 11, 13) really enjoy the place! Hubby and I also appreciated that it forces us to just relax (cause there is not a whole lot to do there).

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us. We truly appreciate your loyalty to us and returning to stay year after year! The Lazy River and the Fontana Lake are both wonderful activities for families to do together. With our onsite and nearby amenities it makes a wonderful family destination. We appreciate your observations on our Recreation amenities. The Golf Carts are rented frequently, which in turns results in never ending repair it seems...however we are looking at ways to improve that experience, so thank you for your input. We also did some work on the Putt Putt Golf Course recently, so hopefully your next trip up you will be able to notice! Thanks again and we can't wait to see you back soon!

Our Miata group stayed an extended visit there last weekend. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The rooms are clean but could be updated a bit. One big thing for us was no cell service for AT & T customers and WiFi was spotty at best. The meals here were very delicious and the portions were extremely generous.Staff was understaffed a bit on Thursday night when we arrived but that soon was corrected by the next day. The catered meals were excellent too and set up buffet style. Please drive up when it is light as when it turns dark, it is very dark and not very well lit. Good luck on GPS on this and carry a map, because you will need it, Good thing I packed extra goodies for us to enjoy as it is limited by shopping in that area. If you want a cozy out of the way place for you and your family to bond, this is the place and probably will make many wonderful memories. Lots of people took walks nearby and others drove the many windy roads because of its proximity to the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway, both were very scenic and pretty to behold. They did have a wonderfully big fireplace in the lobby to sit by and visit with friends. .

Thank you so much for your recent visit. We really enjoyed hosting your group last weekend! It was a lot of fun for us too! We appreciate your wonderful feedback regarding meals here and are happy to hear that you were well fed over the weekend! We are remote and that does make things like cell service and wi-fi a little tricky, but both of those are works in progress that we hope to have upgraded very soon! The quiet time does make for wonderful bonding time, so we hope you were able to get in some of that as well.

We hope to see you back again real soon!

The lodge is well off the beaten path, in a beautiful part of the North Carolina Mountains. We arrived after dark, and it was VERY dark up there. But, the lodge was beautiful, well kept, and the restaurant was great. The room was very nice, much nicer than a similar property at Grand Canyon National Park we stayed in previously. Each room has a sliding glass door and a balcony, for a great view of the mountains.

Everyone was extremely friendly, there was an open Bible in the room and in the hallways, and we were very happy with our stay. If you join the "Dragon Slayers" club, they give you a discount off regular rates as well. It is located on "Moonshiner 28" and very close to the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway - we rode all three on our motorcycle the same day.

We're looking forward to staying there again next fall!

Room Tip: Go with the lodge, rather than outside buildings.

Thank you again for your recent visit with us! We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay in our beautiful lodge! The beauty of this area is just remarkable. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world. We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed our lodge as much as you did a similar property. We try to make everyone feel relaxed when they visit us. It’s nice to get away and clear your mind from everyday life. The area roads are a blast to drive on – it’s great that you were able to get in all three!

We can’t wait until you are back in the Fall!
