“Camping with horses? Don't stay longer than 5 days.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

A group of us went to leatherwood camping with the horses in our Living Quarter trailers. We stayed 7 nights, 8 days. While the campground is very nice, the trails and surrounding area are beautiful, they do accommodate campers very well. They could use a dump station, and garbage pick up at the sites at least every other day. So if you are staying more than 5 nights, expect your black water tanks to be very full. Over the weekend, at least 4 of us had to go to the office at different times to ask if the barn person could come pick up our manure. The barns are far from the campsites, you need to drive to them. There is a bathroom and shower at one of the barns, but again, quite a hike or must drive. The front desk staff are not real friendly. I am sure they cater to folks that rent the cabins and buy property much better, after all that is their main business. I have stayed at much better and friendlier campgrounds for much less money.

Thank you for your review of our property. I am glad you liked our trails, camp ground & barn facilities. Our camping customers LOVE bringing their horses and camping on the beautiful ELK CREEK!! I am sorry that you did not feel like our facilities were appropriate for an extended stay with your horses. We have campers that stay for weeks on end year after year and love our accommodations. Unfortunately due to our proximity to Elk Creek a dump station is not an option at this time. We did offer you a mobile service that can come and pump your tanks for a nominal fee. Most people will do this if they are staying for over a week. Muck buckets are dumped in the AM & PM if needed. We pride ourselves on our customer service for campers & cabin renters alike. We apologize if you did not feel like our services were up to par, we hope you will give us another chance in the future. Happy Trails!

I have been going to Leatherwood for the last 4 years to reset and relax. The resort is family friendly, safe, has spectacular views of the mountains, great fishing, horse riding, swimming, tubing, etc. I could go on and on about Leatherwood. It's my home away from home. Even if you don't like "roughing it", you will enjoy yourself. Whether its a quick weekend getaway or a week long stay, you'll feel refreshed and renewed. The leatherwood staff are wonderful friendly people that make you feel like family. Best kept secret in the mountains of North Carolina.

staff is very friendly. House was very clean. Far from the store, please bring everything you need. Small cafe on site food is VERY good. Kids really enjoyed fishing and the stock ponds. Great getaway from everyday life. The stars are their street lights. :-)

We rented a cabin here over new years with 4 couples. We had a blast! Something that should be mentioned though is that it's pretty far from any real towns in the area so the cabin is really the vacation destination. My husband and I took a lengthy hike with our dogs on the last day of our trip on some of the hiking trails right on the property. The trails were fantastic and really easy to navigate, so if this is your kind of thing, then this place is for you!

We stated a week in the Last Resort. It is a small efficiency near the Welcome Center, restaurant, and horse barns. We had a great peaceful stay in our little house. Our only complainant is the full size bed was very hard and noisy.
Restaurant has great food and service. The Sat and Sun breakfast buffet is wonderful.
We took day trips to Wilksboro, Blowing Rock, Boone, and Grandfather Mountain..

Was in town for a wedding and did not want to stay at a hotel. Did some research into alternatives and found Leatherwood estates. We are not horse people or fishermen but still found this to be a relaxing and pleasant experience. Our cabin was clean and spacious. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a small restaurant/ bar on premises that was open most days. Food was great and reasonably priced. Did some hiking and swam in the pool. Very very nice. Would recommend. Views are just amazing too.

We have stayed here many times as our children were growing up - about 8 different houses on the east and west ridges. This is a wonderful vacation. There is much to do on site with fishing, tubing, camp fires, swiming, hiking and horseback riding. Grandfather Moutain, Blowing Rock, Boone and the Mast General Store (must do with kids) are an easy ride. Our children are now in college and will still make time to go to Leatherwood with us. Great memories to be had here.
