“Old and full of character but the food is average at best.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

The Colonial has been in downtown Elizabeth City for a long time and it shows. I mean that is a kind way because I love old the character of the place. However, the food is just ok. Its not bad but I find that I like to go there anyway. I really can't explain it but I do like the place.

“As another reviewer said--IT'S A DINER!--What do you expect?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

If you sit down in here thinking you will get anything other than pedestrian diner fare, then please see a psychologist. Any fool can see what it is from the moment you walk it--melamine plates, nondescript silverware, a lunch counter, and plastic glasses--they have everything but Flo! It's a breakfast/lunch spot for downtown workers, it does a good job of it, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.

These days, fast food costs $5-6 per meal. There is a foo-foo sandwich shop downtown that unashamedly asks $8 -9 a sandwich and $2 for the drink. Other, trendier restaurants will cost you $10-12 for lunch.

Here, if you choose one of the specials, you can have a meat, 2 veggies, roll/cornbread and your beverage for $7.89 tax included, and it's a heck of a lot better for you than fast food!

Typically, they have 5-6 specials a day, including (depending on the day) a pork bbq plate, chicken chow mein, baked chicken, spaghetti, meatloaf, popcorn shrimp and beef tips,

This is a good, reasonably priced DINER where you can get a good meal and get back to work--it's that simple. The only reason I don't give it a "very good" rating is because I reserve those for higher quality dining.

“Used to be good food. Not so now!!! What we had was terrible!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2012

Went yesterday for lunch. Use to be crowded years ago but hardly anyone in there yesterday. Hadn't been there in several years. Food was great then. This time we had the advertised Country Ham, Cabbage and potato. The cabbage was mush. The Country Ham was a broken slice of Deli ham on top and you got one small boiled potato. It filled half a plate and was just terrible. None of it was hot. We ate some of it but left most. My friend said her coffee had to be left over from breakfast. Couldn't even bring it to color with multiple cream. We will never go back!!! What a shame!!!

“It's a Diner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2009

It's a diner, that being said you have seen the sit-com Mels Diner this is the downtown E-City version. As far as diners go; it's a good one.
