The Washington Duke is a sprawling golf and convention hotel located adjacent to the duke University campus in Durham. In many ways, this is typical of a vanishing breed of hotel: a high end resort-hotel with lovely golf-course views to complement a wood-and-wainscot ambience throughout the hotel.
The hotel is located alongside Duke, but can be difficult to find without map or navigator since it sits in a rural / residential area off a country road. There is no shopping or gas stations nearby. There is ample free parking in front of the hotel, and the facility extends in long wings to either side of the entryway. Check-in was unexpectely difficult: there were computer problems that took quite a while to solve. There is elevator access to rooms, and public areas are clean and quiet.
The room is in classic southern style, wth large beds, sitting area, workspace, and entertainment center. There is a minibar, but no in-room coffee. Internet access was wireless, included, and of high quality. The bathroom had good amenities overall, but one of the lowest bathtubs that I've ever experienced: barely more than a calf-high wading bin.
The hotel restaurants are of high quality: the breakfast buffet was lavish and featured a chef making omlettes to order. The extensive patio areas along the back of the hotel all face the long reaches and tall trees of the golf course, and are a wonderful spot to relax at any time. The hotel has an extensive convention area, so there will be many meetings and waves of people as sessions go in and out and the groups migrate off to dinner. In general, this is managed well by the hotel and it doesn't feel crowded.
