I was expecting something much more lush after reading these glowing reviews. The rooms were nothing special, comparable to any mid-lux chain, and my bathroom had not been thoroughly cleaned before I checked in. The staff was pleasant enough, but they certainly did not go out of their way as the hotel's website suggests. I felt that the decor was straining to be something the hotel so obviously was not. The only redeeming aspect of the visit is that the golf course will, I am sure, be lovely in the summer months. The poor rating is a reflection of the shattered expectations one has after reading the reviews and/or the hotel's website. You should be able to come across something much nicer for $279.

Stayed here after my wedding for two nights. Had a beautiful golf course suite that was luxuriously accommodated and very comfortable. Service was excellent. Restaurants in the hotel are top notch. Golf course and range are also first class. Absolutely a must stay for any one who is in the Raleigh/Durham area and wants to be pampered.

“Elegant, warm, comfortable”

Setting: Beautifully landscaped grounds adjacent to Duke University and golf course. Manicured gardens, idyllic golf course, stately trees. This hotel is as beautiful as the neighboring campus.

Accommodations: Large well appointed room with a view of the golf course. Furnishings were of good quality, with prints in keeping with ambiance of hotel. The room was clean, the linens luxurious, and the bathroom spotless.

Service: First rate staff from the front desk at check in and check out to the maids to messaging services to waiters at a reception and dinner. Efficient and cordial.

“Gracious Ambience in classic southern style”

The Washington Duke is a sprawling golf and convention hotel located adjacent to the duke University campus in Durham. In many ways, this is typical of a vanishing breed of hotel: a high end resort-hotel with lovely golf-course views to complement a wood-and-wainscot ambience throughout the hotel.

The hotel is located alongside Duke, but can be difficult to find without map or navigator since it sits in a rural / residential area off a country road. There is no shopping or gas stations nearby. There is ample free parking in front of the hotel, and the facility extends in long wings to either side of the entryway. Check-in was unexpectely difficult: there were computer problems that took quite a while to solve. There is elevator access to rooms, and public areas are clean and quiet.

The room is in classic southern style, wth large beds, sitting area, workspace, and entertainment center. There is a minibar, but no in-room coffee. Internet access was wireless, included, and of high quality. The bathroom had good amenities overall, but one of the lowest bathtubs that I've ever experienced: barely more than a calf-high wading bin.

The hotel restaurants are of high quality: the breakfast buffet was lavish and featured a chef making omlettes to order. The extensive patio areas along the back of the hotel all face the long reaches and tall trees of the golf course, and are a wonderful spot to relax at any time. The hotel has an extensive convention area, so there will be many meetings and waves of people as sessions go in and out and the groups migrate off to dinner. In general, this is managed well by the hotel and it doesn't feel crowded.

“Great Stay!”

Stayed here for one night while visiting Duke. The property was absolutely beautiful -- gorgeous flowers and landscaping. Staff very helpful and accommodating. I had developed a reaction to a bug bite and asked for a suggestion on where to have it looked at. They sent me to the Duke Urgent Care Center (gave me directions) and what I thought might be a long-dragged out ER type experience was actually very easy & painless. Being right on campus it was great because while I went to the doctor's I could leave my teenage children to wander the campus and enjoy themselves. Would definitely recommend this and return in the future.
