The Duke Gardens are a hidden mecca. There are separate spaces for annuals, natives, bulbs, trees and perennials, ponds streams and big open spaces for playing frisbee with each other or your dog. Children can run to their hearts content, buy some little feed for ducks and the big carp goldfish. Weddings are common especially in the late Spring and early summer, and there are wonderful summer concerts in the gardens, weather permitting.
They have a little snack bar which is ok--but why do you need great food when you can pack your own picnic and just have a feast. Not only have many of my friends been married in the gardens, but I expect that many declarations of love have occurred here.
The gardens are maintained nearly entirely by donations, though many a young student has become a plant lover by doing their student work assignment here.
There is even a farmers market once a week for local produce in the parking lot. There are just too many things to recommend the Duke gardens to miss it.
