“Enjoyable all around”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2009

The service we received was excellent--even when we had to call and ask them to push back our reservation by 30 minutes. The food was very good. Well-portioned salads and complimentary bread were a great start. I had the trout, which was excellent. And my mom had the halibut special, also very good. The wine list was exclusively French, which was fine, but was categorized entirely by region and did not include the names of the types of wines (merlot, pinot noir, etc.). I am a pretty regular wine drinker, but do not know which regions of France are known for which type of wine, so I found this a little annoying. But the waitress was helpful in selecting something. Chocolate mousse for dessert--fantastic. The atmosphere was lively but not too noisy. I would definitely go back. This is a great place for dinner with 2-4 people. Any more than that may be hard to hear everyone at the table.

“Vin Rouge missed the mark”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2009

Had the evening recommended special of fresh Tuna, greens with potatoes and bacon flavored dressing. Terribly over priced and not very taste.

Have eaten at VR before and have always enjoyed the meal... time to move on and try another of Durham's great restaurants.

“Mediocre at best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2009

Another disappointment in the NC Triangle area. A 4 and 1/2 star rating from the News & Observer drew us to this well known bistro. We'll probably give it another chance, but certainly not soon. Here's the good news..the service was excellent; attentive and friendly, and after the Manager saw what had happened to both our entrees, she, or he, comp'd us on two glasses of wine. (The wines were excellent, although the by-the-glass options are sorely lacking.) Dipping oil was excellent, as was the bread. Escargot was bland and undistinguished. Entrees...my lady ordered the salmon, and I the Pompano Pappilot. Both came severely undercooked. Hers rare, when ordered medium, and mine..uncooked excecpt for the flesh around the edges. Both went back to the kitchen. Hers returned just right..and she commented that it was very good. She enjoyed the tastes and presentation, on a bed of lentils. Mine was tasteless...finally cooked...but tasteless. The stuffings of carrots, shallots and potatoes had at best an odd flavor, all were undercooked and went uneaten. The dessert was an apple bread pudding that was the highight of the evening. Except for the company of m'lady and the Muscat. I don't know what it is about the Triangle area...but we've had a sketchy experience at most of the "better" restaurants. Hope this helps you decide about your dinner plans...we still think Pancuito in Hillsborough, Papa's Grille and Four Square in Durham, and Angus Barn are your best bets for a predictably above average meal. So far...Vin Rouge finishes far behind.

“Excellent French bistro fare with a wonderful atmosphere.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2009

Having grown up eating French food, it was only natural that I would want to try Vin Rouge, and we now have been eating there regularly ever since we moved to Durham almost three years ago.

Although it is a bit pricey, it is well worth every penny. The service is excellent and Michael, the manager, always stops by to make sure that everything is all right. The bistro fare in which the chef specializes is delicious and has even taught me a thing or two about French cuisine.

In fact, we liked this place so much that we decided to have our wedding reception there, and that was even better than our usual experience at Vin Rouge. The waitstaff was attentive, our guests kept complimenting us on our choice, commenting on how this was much better than the usual wedding "beef, chicken, or fish?" fare, and our wedding reception was absolutely perfect thanks to the Vin Rouge staff.

If you only have one night in Durham, you may wish to sample something with a bit more of a local flavor, like Piedmont, but Vin Rouge is also an excellent choice for those who know that they like.

“Tasty bistro food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2009

Vin Rouge has a real bistro feel, from the decor to the professional (but not stuffy) service, and the food -- steak frites, charcuterie, etc. -- is authentic and fairly reasonably priced. The outdoor patio is very pleasant in nice weather.
The major downside is the indordinately high markups on wine & alcohol. I would eat there much more often if they want back to serving inexpensive, or at least reasonably-priced, "house" wines by the small or large carafe.
