“excellent food, excellent service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

The brussels sprout pizza was phenomenal. So were the salads and antipasti we tried. Our waitress was great. The beer is too expensive though, and the atmosphere is the typical LOUD trendy restaurant (bare bulb lighting and all...). Also, the seating is at communal, shared tables, which is fun for a large group, but can be a bit awkward for a couple who want privacy.
Overall, the food is good enough to make up for the atmosphere and the rather expensive check...

“Heard rave reviews...and was disappointed.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

I heard of Pizzeria Toro through a colleague and decided to try it. A friend and I went for dinner and we agreed that they sure do think alot of their pizzas, antipasti and wine list. Waaay over priced. The antipasti were creative and different...we had the house braseola...wouldn't recommend it. The kale salad was very good. The wood fired pizza I had..San Marzano tomatoes with buffalo mozzarella..I've had better wood fired pizza at Brixx.

“It's special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Besides great wood-fired pizza this restaurant has a superb small menu of unique other dishes that are great for accompanying dishes or on their own instead of pizza. The small wine list is excellent and the ambience is hip and lively.

“For locals only, please.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

If you've ever lived in a town with a big enough Italian population to support its own restaurant culture then give this place a pass. The rave reviews this place has garnered are all written by folks who clearly don't know wood-fired, thin-crust pizza, and the fact that Pizzeria Toro's chef-owner is a local who learned his chops in Seattle will tip you off: Arturo's this ain't. The room is casual-elegant handsome, although at this price point we'd just as soon have a table to ourselves, thanks, especially given the large number of small children around. And indeed Toro is not cheap, even in comparison with coal- or wood-fired oven places in NYC. The prices are less shocking at dinnertime than at lunch: the menu is exactly the same for both meals. I'd like to support Durham's downtown and I expect that Toro will become an institution, especially for cash-flush Duke folks, but please do not mistake these costly, oil-heavy pizzas as paragons of their kind. We won't be back.

“Interesting pizzas, fun vibe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

My wife is a foodie, so she was dying to try this place after hearing all her friends rave about it. It mostly lived up to expectations. The atmosphere is hip, casual and warm. The wait staff is superb. And kale salad is wonderful, and the pizzas are tasty - great crusts and bold and inventive combinations of toppings. My only complaint: I had the brussels sprouts pizza (I love brussels sprouts...go figure) and though it was good, the brussels sprouts themselves were simply shaved pieces of brussels sprouts scattered over the pizza - they might have benefited from having a bit of dressing or sauce on them, and they definitely would have been tastier if they had been browned just a little and made a bit crispier. But that's a minor complaint. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal here.
