“Private Party Room Upstairs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Recently enjoyed an elegant private party upstairs. The Mateo wine list offers an exceptional array of choices and shows the great care taken to inform guests on the wide range of Spanish wines available (those served at this party were outstanding). Service was attentive and the food was excellent -- especially the roast suckling pig. Bravo.

“Rude and petty manager”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013 via mobile

Shame on the manager. Petty. Party of 8 ordered $300 of food. One person was eating half a sandwich she had on her. Manager walked up and interrupted her conversation and told her that wasn't allowed. Really??? After we ordered lots of food and wine
??? Shame on her. 8 people left disgusted.

“Tapas excelentes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

These guys get the tapas format right at Mateo.
I have traveled to Spain a few times, and this is pretty close to the real thing when it comes to the style and taste of the food, not to mention a cool atmosphere. They get extra points for having Estrella Galicia on tap.
I like to order the Patatas Bravas, Jamon, Calamari, Pinxtos, and maybe an additional seafood or meat dish.
The night I was here, they were having an excellent nightly special of clams cooked in white wine with white beans. It was delicious.

“Top Tapas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Been here a few times now, enough to check out several selections on the large tapas menu. It can be tough to get in, as the place is very popular. I've had good luck going at opening (5pm) on Sunday.

The albondigas are by far my favorite, served in a very flavorful tomato sauce with field peas. They're terrific--four good-sized meatballs and a nice amount of the tomatoes and peas. I also very much enjoyed a special of quail escabeche with a citrus sauce and lentils. The shrimp with chorizo over grits and the Spanish deviled eggs were also winners. One time I had a tandoori chicked dish with pine nuts and an orange sauce that didn't really do it for me, but the last time I went it was no longer on the menu.

The staff has always been very pleasant and dishes come out from the kitchen at a pretty good pace. I wish they were a little more generous with their wine pours, but oh well. Most dishes are between $6 and $10 and in most cases two would make a meal.

“Seriously Good Spanish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013 via mobile

I've had two stellar meals at Mateo and strongly recommend this place for those into food. Service on both visits was great, and the lively atmosphere immediately sets a happy tone. It's a great place for larger parties if willing to share, allowing you to taste a good chunk of the menu. The wine list and beverage program are very strong and heavily Spanish.

At this point, I have tried over thirty menu items and maybe two were in the average category. Everything else has ranged from very good to stellar. Simple pintxos (marcona almonds, olives, anchovies, etc.) rely on top notch ingredients and make for great pre meal snacking. It's hard to pick dishes to highlight, as there have been many. Anything with short ribs and Brussels sprouts has been great, as has any pork dish (BBQ tail, mini ribs). On the seafood side, clams and mussels have been highlights. I'm admittedly not much of a dessert person, but their churros and creme caramel (and dessert sherries) were satisfying.

All in all, this is a great restaurant. A previous review mentioned over salting, which was either untrue or an anomaly. On our visits and reports from friends, there has not been anything close to a salt issue.
