“Friendly and Casual”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

We went there for lunch yesterday and will definitely be going back and bringing other friends. We had the traditional sandwiches, Havana and Caney. Local, slow roasted pork where they also render the fat from the pork and use that for their cooking as well. Roberto, the owner, came out and spoke w/us which is always a good feeling on your first time to any restaurant. It is an order from the counter and they bring it to your table kind of place which is especially good for lunch. Fabulous old building downtown in a storefront that you could easily miss. They just started opening for Sunday brunch -- 11 to 3 but haven't tried that yet.

“Best cuban sandwich”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

Walking into the shop it's clear they roast their own pork on site - the aroma is amazing. The cuban sandwiches are the best I've ever had, and make sure you try the oven roasted maduros (plantains).

“Wonderful Food! Wonderful People!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

My daughter and I stopped by Old Havana Sandwich Shop for dinner in early December. All the parking spots were full at the front of the restaurant however the church parking lot across the street was close by and free. As soon as we walked in we felt welcome and it felt like we imagined it might be like to be in Old Havana as we have not actually ever been there. We prefer to eat at restaurants that are not chains where the owners pride is in everything they do and they participate in the community.
We loved the maduros (plantains) and the croquetas (hush puppies meet pork). I had the special for the evening which was an incredibly delicious osso bucco.
Great fun, great place!

“The tapas and Cubanos are excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

This place is good if you want a cubano, the plantain are ok but I suspect they were out of a box. I hope the new hours and management improve the service. The manager and owner are a class act but some of the wait staff were less than lackluster. We wantd a table and the wait staff seem uninterested to clear a table which was very disappointing , the manager broke his neck to clean the table and apologize. The tapas are excellent and are to die for and definently authentic Spanish fair, please try them they made our experience the best even after lackluster service. The sardines , salchichon and Mojos make your experience authentic also the cafecito makes you feel your not in downtown Durham but in Little Havana in Miami especially with thier live music on weekends. Despite the lackluster wait staff which are probably gone by now, the food made up for it and the food never disappoints . The manager also was very accommodating, polite , and cordial speaking in Spanish to try to make our experience the best, so despite the shortcomings of the staff I recommend this restruant to taste some tapas or the to die for Cubanos, go and check it out.

“Excellent sandwich in restored downtown location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

I sought this place out while in RTP for a conference recently as I love a good cuban sandwich. The downtown Durham location was easy to find and parking was readily available on the street just outside. Service was friendly and quick, and the cuban sandwich was superb! Highly recommended!
