“Don't let it fool ya”

Millennium Hotel Durham

May 28, 2008

This place is tops on my list of worst hotels. I booked through hotwire under the understanding that it was a 3.5 star Hilton. I've stayed in other Hilton's before, and this was nothing like any other Hilton. The hotel claims to have 'newly renovated' rooms, this merely means new beds. Furniture from the 70's, carpet with stains in it, bedding with a red stain in it, electrical outlets that do not work, an ancient TV, and a bathroom that looked ancient. Thankfully, hotwire was understanding and offered me a full refund.

“Pleasent Stay at the Millenium”

Millennium Hotel Durham

We stayed at this hotel after a wild show at Duke University. We opened for Third Eye Blind as well as the Roots that day. It was Duke's spring concert drinking festival extravaganza so things had gotten a little out of hand that day. After packing up what was left of our dressing room (a couple of crazy kids had gotten in there like raccoons into the garbage and stole our food and beer! Then passed out at the scene of the crime to boot!) and headed for the Millennium Hotel Durham that I had gotten for a great price on Priceline. I read a few of the reviews on here and must admit I was not expecting a great stay.

Upon pulling up to the hotel we were greeted with a very impressive landscape and grounds layout. It was like we were pulling up to a fancy mansion with great hedges and floral decor, fountains and statues! I walked in to check and was met with a very pleasant staff. I will say that the room was a little dated. It had a sink in the room aside from the sink in the bathroom that reminded me or something from an old pop up camper. The beds however were VERY comfortable which is a big plus in our book. After a day of crazyness in the sun, we probably could have fallen asleep in a bed of glass but this was much more welcome.

In summary, the hotel was a little dated but clean, the room was very large, and the beds were quite comfortable. With the great rate I got from Priceline, this was a great stay for us.

“Showing its age”

Millennium Hotel Durham

Mar 3, 2008

Stayed in Room 200 and found the room to be a bit larger than most although I think this may have been a handicap room because of the numerous hand bars in the bathroom and tub. Paid $24 for a crowded hotel shuttle bus that arrived 45 minutes after I called from the airport. Internet was not working during my stay but there are wireless spots in the bar area. The carpet appeared new but the ceilings had several wet stains in addition to many nail "pop-outs". Both sinks underneath had white tape wrapped around the pipe joints which looked real tacky. The king bed was very comfortable. Unless you have a car you are pretty much trapped since there are no stores or restaurants nearby. Room service was excellent (try the lasagna) and reasonably priced. Cleaning staff was friendly and very efficient. This hotel is very convenient to Duke.

“Very Pleasant but AVOID the Club Bar”

Millennium Hotel Durham

Save Review
3 of 5 stars
Cery, NC
Feb 10, 2008

Was worried after reading so many negative reviews. However, I found my stay to be quite pleasant with one exception which follows.

The physical amenities were above average; common spaces and my room (on the first floor in the Duke Sleep Disorder wing)were clean (no sign of any bugs referred to in other reviews) and airy. King bed was exceptionally comfortable. Location and ease of access to all Duke and VA facilities is higly convenient but not walkable. Impressive fleet of vans for airport transit. Front desk personnel and maid staff refreshingly courteous and cheerful - probably the most outstanding featureof the place.

Needs grab rails in bathtub. Bathroom much too small - barely able to turn around. Room however is oversize.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS: The "Club Bar" unless you BYOB and make your own drinks. Barmaid on duty the evening of 2/8/08 was totally inept, incompetent and inexperienced. Two scotch old fashioneds with request to muddle fruit were an incomprehensible challenge to her. Served in proper glass but only half filled and no ice and only splash of scotch. My request to add some more scotch resulted in charge for a DOUBLE of $11.50; wife's "fruit juice" without rocks was $7.25. Barmaid tried her best to be talkative and cheerful but couldn't overcome the bitterness of the Club Bar experience. Go there at your own risk!

    • Disliked — Inexperience of some staff (barmaid especially); cost of alcoholic drinks

“Very average hotel”

Millennium Hotel Durham

Dec 5, 2007

Although the lobby is very nice, the rooms are small and very, very dated. Hotwire rated this hotel at 3 1/2 stars but it is definately not. The room was no different then that of the Super 8 motel. This hotel does not meet expectations for the price!

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The lobby and restaurant
    • Disliked — Very dated rooms, too much like a mid-grade hotel
