“Lousy hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2011

The owners and management of this hotel clearly have little love for their customers. I made the mistake of staying here because a business meeting was held here. My room was shabby, I had no hot water one day, the tub drain was clogged, the food was mediocre, the general ambience was dingy, dark and oppressive, many hallways and some rooms had an upleasant odor, and the staff were discourteous and difficult to find. The manager even lied about the hot water problem, saying that my report was the first he had heard, which I learned was not true that day from others staying at the hotel and (from TripAdvisor) a frequent complaint. I did learn that I could have hot water if I took my shower very early in the morning (before 6AM).

I stayed here awhile back and concur with bad reviews. Very nice lobby but once you make that walk down the hall, LOOKOUT. It does have a smell a mildew musty smell. I hated this place and did not like anything about it. Just a dirty, old hotel that needs to be torn down.

This is an OLD hotel. It's trying to look like a "classic" hotel but comes off as simply OLD. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, creaked and squeaked with the slightest shift of your weight. The air/heat unit was LOUD. I got no sleep. They charge an add'l fee at checkout for the hotel "amenities". Things like business center, excercise room, etc. None of which I used but apparently everyone pays extra for it. I say extra because the fee is charged at checkout automatically (even if you used priceline to book the hotel). It is not included in the posted rate. Do you use a cell phone? Well...make plans to do without it while you stay here, because it will not work! DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Room Tip: Stay at a different hotel!

Stayed here recently on a trip to Durham. Avoid this place if you can. We paid $106 for a one night stay and unfortunately it wasn't worth $40. Next time we're in Durham, we'll just pay a bit more to stay at a nicer place.

Positives:
1. The breakfast buffet was good with lots of options (fresh fruit, bacon, granola, cereal, eggs, grits, etc).
2. The lobby looks nice.
3. The staff is very pleasant. Great southern hospitality.

Negatives:
1. There is a STRONG mildew odor in the rear of the hotel (hallway AND rooms). If you must stay here, demand a room in main building/front part of the hotel.

2. The room furnishings are old and worn. Our room's door handle and lamp were rusted! The clock radio had to be from the 80's. Check out the pics.

3. The bathroom was extremely small, with poor ventilation and old fixtures.

4. The linens were so over laundered and starched that they felt more like plastic than cotton...a very creepy feeling. After working 8 hours and then jumping in the car for the 5 hour drive to this hotel, I barely slept as I couldn't wait to get out of that bed.

The feel of the room was so bad that once we were up and dressed, we checked out. Didn't feel comfortable lounging around and watching TV in there.

Room Tip: Do not take a room in the rear of the hotel. That's where the mildew odor is worst.

assigned this hotel twice in aug2011 via priceline name your own price. after check-out, hotel assessed a 10% service fee that was not disclosed at booking or check-in and refuses to credit. admin staff very rude and aggressive. we will avoid this hotel and priceline in the future.

Room Tip: little or no cell service in any rooms

This is a very nice and clean hotel with friendly staff. Very traditional style, could use some updating. Carpets in common areas & sofas in lobby are dated and a bit worn, but clean. Overall, no major problems & I would be willing to stay there again. It's conveniently close to Duke University & Hospital and they have a shuttle that runs to the hospital all day so that is convenient. My only real complaint, as others have mentioned, is that they charge an additional $5 per day for "amenities" (per lobby attendant, charged to all guests regardless of whether or not you use those amenities). My advice to the hotel is to just increase your price per room by $5 so as to not to have the additional charge which seems a bit misleading if you think you've already paid for the room.

I stayed with my cousin in a room w/2 queen beds. The beds were wonderful, however I can't say much for anything else. No complimentary breakfast at all, not even a muffin and juice.
We were given conflicting info about the shuttle service (Oxy say it was free within 10 mi radius, Michelle said it was a 5 mi radius). We ended up hitching rides with family members anyway, but it's the principle! The cost for their shuttle to the airport is $35 PER PERSON; a taxi is $35 for two people, so split the fare if you need to take public trans to the airport.
When I used the business center by the lobby to check in for my returning flight, a message came up that the computer would shut down in 10 minutes for updates. Five minutes later it shut down. I went to the front desk, and they gave me a key to the 4th floor business center, which is the Club floor. So ASK FOR THE 4TH FLOOR BUSINESS CENTER if the one by the lobby isn't working.
The outlets in our room (236) didn't all work so be sure to check whatever you're charging that it's actually charging. I think that whole building needs to be rewired, quite frankly.
I'm giving this 3 "dots" only because of the beds. It's the hotel's only saving grace.
