“Renovations Long Overdue”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

The place looks pretty enough, rooms were fine but the service was mediocre at best, food slow and if you have any allergic reactions to mold you should contact your Dr. before going to the restaurant. Renovations begin in late October and that will fix the mold/restaurant issue but the new owners need to have a job fair to find workers who actually are motivated. I've never seen such a flat staff and it was from front desk to maintenance. Might be a union issue.

On our first visit to the Outer Banks, we found this lovely small resort on the northern end of the Banks. We knew nothing about the Banks when we made our choice and found that the Sanderling was the perfect resort located in the relatively quiet town of Duck. Our room overlooked a pristine, miles long beach; the room and porch spacious. After the planned renovations after this winter the resort will be even more attractive. Take a load off and head to Duck.

The Sanderling was recommended to us by friends who live in Charlotte. We had not heard of the Outer Banks before, but would love to go back.

The Sanderling is a beautiful, but tired, hotel resort. To be fair to them, they are planning to close on 28th October 2012 and reopen in April 2013 after a major refit. On the first evening we ate at the Lifesaving Station restaurant. When my husband went to the rest room the ceiling fell on his head. It really did. I went to have a look and there was a hole in the ceiling about 2 foot square where it had fallen on him whilst he was washing his hands. He managed to deflect a piece of wood that fell from the ceiling so that it did not hit him on the head and he was fine. The staff did not take the situation seriously at all to begin with, which seems odd for such a litigious nation, but we were offered free desert and a round of drinks. I think the cost of the meal might have been more appropriate but never mind!

The rest of the stay was uneventful! The staff are all very friendly and accommodating. The hotel is right on a beautiful beach which at the time we visited was quite quiet. There is an outdoor pool which is shared with local residents and very well kept. The rooms are spacious and clean. The bathroom we had looked like it might do with some updating but this is probably being taken care of in the refit.

There is a very small gym - two tread mills, two cross trainers and some weights. Luckily it was not much in use whilst we were there so I did not have any problems using it.

Coffee is provided in the reception area in the morning and between 3 and 5pm cookies and tea are provided. The cookies are very good!

We ate at the Left Bank which I would higlhly recommend. It is not cheap but the food is spectacular and the wine list very good.

If we do manage to go to the Outer Banks again I would be interested to see what the hotel looks like after its refit.

We have been to the Sanderling several times and have enjoyed each stay. We like the quiet of the offseason. Rooms are well appointed and the food never disappoints.

I don't understand why I have to use a minimum of 200 characters in this review though.

Looking for upscale accommodations but with a beach setting? Sanderling Resort and Spa is just for you. Honestly, I can't express how wonderfully charming and sophisticated this place is. Not a detail is forgotten, right down to the delicious taffy on your pillow each night. The rooms are decorated with such style but also comfort. The beds, pillows, and bedding are plush and comfortable; making it easy to forget that you’re still down on earth. Even the robes they provide are heavenly. The resort itself flows nicely from building to building offering every amenity imaginable from the spa, the pool, the Left Bank restaurant and so forth. In some hallways you’ll even see framed Hermes scarves…not bad eye candy. The entire staff couldn’t be any friendlier and helpful offering constant assistance (but without being pushy). I enjoyed a much needed facial at their spa and felt so refreshed and invigorated afterwards. The facialist also introduced me to the Ilike skincare line and I’m officially hooked. We had a special evening dining at The Left Bank restaurant. Though the ala carte menu looked tempting we just couldn’t resist the multi-course tasting menu with wine pairing. We were in a state of bliss while trying each dish with its paired wine. Both the sommelier and server couldn’t have been more delightful leading us into the perfect dining experience. And of course, the beach, with its sand dunes hugging the shores; the resort makes it so convenient to enjoy North Carolina’s treasured coast. Beach towels are plentiful with a deck area to wash off your feet as you approach the resort. Lounges, umbrellas, and chairs are readily setup by the beach butler at any time.

Room Tip: We enjoy the Main Inn, ocean room. You're high enough to enjoy views of the water, and it's...

We have been going to the Sanderling since 2008 - sometimes twice a year. We love the area - Duck, Outer Banks - but more than that the Sanderling itself is a great place to stay. Right on the beach, fantastic sea and sound views, you really don't need to leave the hotel at all! So peaceful.
Looking forward to next Spring to see all the changes.

Room Tip: South Inn is the best for sea views.

We stayed for 5 nights. The first 3 were spent in a Oceanfront room as part of the romance package; the last 2 were on the Sound side (parking lot side) of the Main Inn. The Oceanfront room was far superior and very enjoyable -- we could see the water and watch the sunrise without getting out of bed. The best part of the Sanderling is the SPA and the friendliness of the staff. But for the price, I expected a higher level of service and quality.

The restaurants (Lifesaving Station and Left Bank) were extremely overpriced and the food was just OK. Our best meal by far was at Blue Point in Duck, which I highly recommend for lunch, dinner, or sunset cocktails on the sound. Some nights they offer live music on the sound. Acqua was great for soundside dining, Cravings is great for sandwiches and Duck Deli BBQ is inexpensive and very tasty. The drive to Nags Head is well worth it for breakfast at the Nags Head Pier Restaurant.

Certain things like having to walk to the pool without so much as a paved path and paying extra for access to tennis courts detracted from our stay. But the renovations planned for this winter will resolve the pool issue.

Highly recommend the spa -- treatments rivaled the best I've ever had, and the staff was very friendly and knowledgable. We took advantage of the steam room and jacuzzi on days we didn't even have treatments scheduled, and the staff welcomed us each time. Couples massage was fantastic and well worth cost. Our appt ended close to sunset and we were able to enjoy tea outside with private view of the Sound.

The beach at Sanderling is gorgeous, and they provide umbrellas and towels. But swimming wasn't allowed our entire stay bc of dangerous rip currents.

We're a couple in our mid 30s without kids. We were significantly younger than most of the guests during our stay in September. That wasn't a problem, but could be a consideration as it somewhat impacted the atmosphere of the resort. Keep in mind nothing is within walking distance except the resort restaurants, and cabs are expensive.

Overall, the convenience of a resort (as opposed to renting a house) was worth the cost, and this was a great way to experience the OBX. Eat elsewhere and visit the other towns... Duck, Nags Head and Manteo for sure!

Room Tip: Oceanfront was worth it!
