“Enjoyable stay in the mountains”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2010

The Chalet Inn is exactly what it advertises, a perfect Swiss chalet-styled inn in the middle of the beautiful western North Carolina mountains. The location, about a mile from the highway kept things quiet while letting you get out to see the area easily. The innkeepers, Hanneke and George were gracious, helpful, and a pleasure to talk to. The inn's rooms were just the right size, and our balcony overlooked the forested area in the back yard. The grounds had a number of trails that were well-maintained, and just enough to allow you to enjoy a walk. The morning breakfast was delicious and complemented by talking with Hannake. We couldn't have asked for a better relaxing getaway.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights during our last baby-free vacation. Although we arrived late (11PM) we were greeted warmly at the door and our hostess even helped us bring our stuff to our 3rd floor room (Alpine Suite). We had breakfast in our room everyday and started our days around noon! :-)

Pros:
Peaceful and quiet. Going to sleep with the sound of the pond frogs is amazing.
Great bed and comfy sheets.
The tap water is really tasty and cold.
Breakfast served in your room allows you to sleep as long as you want without missing breakfast.
There is no shortage of things to do in the area and the knowledgeable inn keepers (or staff) will help you design your day's activities. We took the Smoky Mountain train ride, shopped for antiques, went to Asheville, and fly fished in the Cherokee land.

Cons:
Nothing but a few minor things.
For those who like watching TV: TV/Rec room (Jessy's Cottage) is all the way down the steep driveway (A drive, not a walk, for most people). The cottage smells very moldy and could use a few updates.
The Alpine Suite has small windows and doesn't get much sunlight in the morning. We turned on all the available lights in the sitting room in the AM. The room's balcony is facing nice trees in the property, but doesn't have $170/night views.
We didn't like their morning coffee (It tasted like cheap can coffee).
Plastic shelves and a plastic framed mirror in the bathroom, as well as green plastic lawn furniture around the property, looked very much out of place in this gorgeous place.
Like many other rural areas, dinning options are seriously limited after 9PM.

I found the Chalet Inn while looking for B&Bs in the NC Mtns. online for a nice place for my wife and I to spend our anniversary, and plan to keep going every year to visit George and Hanneke. The Chalet Inn website provides two kinds of directions - a regular route and scenic route to see waterfalls on the way. We have gone both and have had no trouble. George is always helpful in getting us where we need to go.

George and Hanneke welcomed us as part of their family as soon as we arrived the first time we went. They recommend restaurants for us and have even made reservations. Five fifty-three in Sylva is one of our favorites. Breakfast in the dining room at the Inn or in your room is always great, and we look forward to George giving us a weather update and other suggestions for things to do while we are there.

I checked restaurant and room service below only for breakfast.

We have now been four times and look forward to returning. We have stayed in the Chalet Inn for three of them and just recently stayed in their new Chalet Suites. Rooms are always immaculate George, Hanneke and their staff have always been available and friendly.

For Christmas a few years ago, we bought both sets of our parents a 1-night stay to be used anytime during the following year. Both went up and had a great time as well. You will as well if you go.

What a lovely place, felt at home, great breakfast, the grounds were immaculate with trails, great views, things to do like bocci ball, badminton , horseshoes. There is no restaurant but plenty of places to eat in Dillsboro and Sylva. the innkeepers made you feel like family.
I would definitely go back again.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights during April 2010. We agree with all of the other reviews that this place is a hidden gem. We were greeted with a warm friendly smile and we felt very welcomed. The service from start to finish was first class and all of our expectations were met. George suggested some great hikes in the Smoky Mountain N.P. and Hanneke packed a nice trail lunch. We especially enjoyed the peace and quiet and we were thankful that other quests enjoyed the calmness too. It felt like the owners treated us like family, which is something we have never experienced at any other lodging. The owners and hostess really respect their guests and they have earned our respect too. We would definitely return here again for a weekend-away and relaxation.

I have been going to Chalet Inn for 5 years, solo and with friends and have always received excellent service. It is the most peaceful place to unwind from daily hectic life. Grounds are beautifully kept and you can simply relax by watching birds and squirrels going about their activities or read a book in front of the fireplace. If you do not feel like leaving the Chalet Inn, you can hike on their property . Hanneke and George are the warmest and friendliest hosts you would ever want to meet. They make you feel so welcome and go beyond trying to make your stay as wonderful as possible. They have extensive knowledge about places to go and things to do depending on your preferences. It is wonderful to come home after daily hike to a roaring fire and glass of German beer or wine. Rooms are very comfortable and very clean with private balconies and you can enjoy views of mountain range or woods. Tasty breakfasts are always something to look forward to.I stay at Chalet Inn every moment I get and would highly recommend it.

I have been to the Chalet Inn many times - Hanneke and George are the ultimate hosts. The Inn is like a little slice of Bavaria in the NC mountains. The Inn is comfortable, spotlessly clean, attractively furnished, and the atmosphere is very friendly. Hanneke's breakfast buffet is always a delicious treat, appealing to the American palate while remembering the tastes of their many European guests. The grounds surrounding the Inn are beautifully maintained, with a crochet/bocce ball area and lovely walking trails up the mountain behind the Inn. It's a very peaceful place - no noises except those of nature. The directions on the website are very easy to follow, as well as quite a few "Chalet Inn" signs on the main roads. The paved driveway is a little steep (it's the Smoky Mountains, after all) but can easily be maneuvered. Give the place a try - I promise you won't be disappointed.
