“Excellent for young couples too”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

Sometimes B&B's get the stigma of being for the older couples, but being a couple in our later twenties, we loved The Chalet Inn. My boyfriend is an avid fly fisherman and has been to Cherokee many times to fish. When finding a place to spend news years, we were looking for an affordable place to spend a long weekend. We live in Midtown Atlanta and wanted to escape the city for a weekend and couldn't have been happier with the inn. We were greeted by name and the drive here was easy. We loved our suite room and it had every amenity of a 'city' hotel that we are used to. We enjoyed wine in the main lodge and then were off to dinner. We would definitely recommend this place to younger couples looking for a great escape and a peaceful retreat.

Read about it in our local paper. Getting there was easy. A beautiful place and beautiful view from a top floor back room. It was necessary to drive out to Sylva or elsewhere for dinner. It was a good base for exploring the Smoky Mountains area, including Cherokee, Ashland, Blue Ridge Parkway, Sylva, Franklin & Highlands. It would be ideal for those who want to stay in one place and relax, and be given a program to follow. I felt the friendly, and almost overly inquisitive, owners longed to direct us in our activities, and being thrown together with them and a few strangers seemed a bit forced. Luckily we could get breakfast served in the room.
April 2008. (Many places appear on tripadvisor long after I was there, but tripadvisor gives a choice of only the last year in "When did you travel").

Room Tip: Upstairs for the view.

“Beautiful setting, too much "intimacy"”

Really appreciate Shadow010 taking the time to post a review in 2012 for their their 2008 visit. Fully agree with their comment "a good base for exploring the Smoky Mountains area, including Cherokee, Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, Sylva, Franklin & Highlands."

Their review gives us the opportunity to let them know it is time to come back! In 2008, we only had the Bed & Breakfast. However, in 2010 we opened our discrete Boutique Hotel in the same traditional Alpine style offering totally self-contained accommodations each with its own private entrance, refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker and AppleTV with free NetFlix and Internet Radio, and as always, with Breakfast served in your Suite/Room at no extra charge. In our Boutique Hotel you do not have to interact with anyone except for the possibility of encountering another guest in the parking lot!

Re: "almost overly inquisitive, owners longed to direct us in our activities,"

Guilty as charged - we got so much more out of our years in Europe because of Gasthaus owners and locals telling us about what was not in the guidebooks. George initiated the Waterfall and Hiking Map that is the centerpiece of this County's Chamber of Commerce's marketing efforts and for our guests has also made three other maps with roads, restaurants and points of interest that are not on the State map and are in a lot larger scale than the State map. If guests so desire, our Associate Innkeepers are also trained to use these maps to give guests customized directions each day to whatever they wish to see. In addition, George designed and hosts a Website (separate from our business Website) of things to see and do in the area. And since we still have not found all the gems in our mountains, we are always eager to learn from our guests if they found something we did not know about.

P.S. If you do choose the Chalet Suites, his maps are available in your welcoming booklet and with the free WiFi you can access his Website.

Re: "Read about it in our local paper."

We were especially pleased when an earlier guest returned home to San Francisco excited enough about her visit that she wrote the article in her local paper that brought Shadow010 to us.

Having waited until the last moment to make our reservations, we booked multiple nights at a price that was over and above our budget. Our mistake. Most hotels were booked; however, we found the Overlook suite at The Chalet Inn. The Chalet Inn is on a secluded hillside whose road would cause some guests to "pause" as they begin the climb. We did so with no issues. Our room was as represented on their web site except for the bathroom sink. The sink is not in the bathroom, but is beside the mini fridge and microwave; right as you walk in the suite (see pic.) We found this to be awkward and not what one would expect when paying $200 per night. When making your reservations, we recommend you "confirm" what style breakfast they will provide. Some offerings are delivered to your room and others are at a sit down breakfast in the main lodge. Their dining area is small and will not accommodate all overnight guests at once; hence the delivery to guest rooms.
We did not use the jacuzzi or steam shower and, therefore, can't comment on them. The balcony view was nice, but no different than many views you'll see when exploring the mountains. Our guests were cordial and the evening wine/beer offerings were appreciated. Most of the reviews to date for the Chalet Inn are positive and I would not take issue with them. Everyone has a different takeaway from a lodging or dining experience and we can only share what it meant to us.

“Fall Foliage "Yes" - Accommodations "See Below"”

Re: "The sink is not in the bathroom, but is beside the mini fridge and microwave; right as you walk in the suite (see pic.) We found this to be awkward and not what one would expect when paying $200 per night."

When we were building our first building, a Bed & Breakfast in Swiss-Alpine style, we built the bathrooms for the rooms in the traditional American style, i.e. one room containing a tub/shower, sink and toilet. Over the years we saw a change in the traveling public in that not everyone traveling together were living together. Thus, when we built our new Boutique Hotel, also in the Swiss-Alpine style we decided to go with the European style bathroom in those Suites. The bathroom has a Steam shower for two and a toilet. The toilet is separated from the shower area with a pocket door for even greater privacy. The sink is outside the bathroom in the bedroom area. This arrangement provides greater privacy than the traditional American bathroom. The design met the State Building Code as well as Health codes: we consistently receive the highest score from the Health Department on their twice annual unannounced inspections.

Re: "When making your reservations, we recommend you "confirm" what style breakfast they will provide."

We agree a good breakfast is an important part of a traveler's experience and dedicate a full page on our Website to explain in detail what our breakfast is and how it is served. We are one of the very few B&B's and/or Boutique Hotels that does not charge for providing Breakfast in your Room or Suite.

Re: "Some offerings are delivered to your room and others are at a sit down breakfast in the main lodge."

Each day the breakfast varies. Whether you have Breakfast in your Room or Suite or in the Dining Room or on the Back Patio by the brook, you receive the same Breakfast items regardless of where it is served.

Re: "Their dining area is small and will not accommodate all overnight guests at once; hence the delivery to guest rooms."

Yes/No. The dining area is small, however, we can't recall ever seeing or staying in a hotel or inn that could seat all overnight guests in their dining room at once. Again, we go with the European concept in our Bed & Breakfast Dining Room, in that each guest traveling alone/each couple/each family is seated at an individual table rather than a communal table(s). And we do three Breakfast Seatings. In all our years we have never denied anyone the opportunity to eat in the Dining Room if they so desire. The guests writing this review did have Breakfast in the Dining Room each day of their stay, even though Breakfast had already been delivered to their Suite their first morning.

Re: "The balcony view was nice, but no different than many views you'll see when exploring the mountains."

We are pleased they liked the balcony; we are not aware of many accommodations that have private balconies as large as ours - in their case, their Suite's balcony is 6 feet by 17 feet. As to the balcony's view, our 22.5 private forested mountain acres provides natural views with no buildings, roads or traffic in sight.

Re: "Having waited until the last moment to make our reservations, we booked multiple nights at a price that was over and above our budget. Our mistake. . . when paying $200 per night……We did not use the jacuzzi or steam shower and, therefore, can't comment on them….."

Our rooms and prices vary from economy to upscale ($96 - $200): however, as the reviewers pointed out, our only availability when they booked were the jacuzzi suites. We are empathetic and understand that for guests who do not want to enjoy these features it is difficult to feel comfortable when you have paid for premium features that you really didn't want and then don't take advantage of.

I stayed at the Chalet Inn with my Mum and my little sister and it was a pleasure to be there. The rooms are of course clean and individually furnished. Our room had a nice fireplace and balcony with view of fall colors.
Breakfast was very good and different from the normal breakfast you get in american hotels. We had a german feast platter (I think that is what it's called) for dinner, and being german, I can say it was up to all my standards.
The best experience in the Chalet Inn is the friendly and helpfull staff. George, Hanneke and Tim always had good ideas of what to do and see, as well as detailed road maps.
The good quality wifi was also a plus.
I will certainly return and tell all my friends to stay there for a nice getaway from the troubles of the city.

My husband and I stay in B&Bs as often as possible - this one is at the top of our list! Hidden away but close enough to civilization - beautifully maintained and so very clean and comfortable! We were tired when we arrived the first night and chose to order a German meal in our room - what a treat! The food was delicious and authentic and delivered promptly! The room, 2nd fl. of main house, had a nice wooden table and benches in front of the window with a lovely view - a very nice touch not only for meals but comfortable and perfect for reading and gazing at the colorful leaves, as well as bird watching. Enjoyed the balcony off our room, complete with rockers and overflowing with blooming flowers in built-in boxes on the rail. Took a walk on the marked trail through the woods on the grounds, enjoyed the hammock in the trees and the pretty pond - so much to do and so little time - roasting marsheallows over pit by pond, all kinds and sorts of outdoor games like croquet (been a long time), etc. All in all, we wished we could have stayed much longer and will return in the future. Enjoyed delicious breakfast with other guests - each at individual tables - and excellent service and ambience. Great choice!

The Chalet Inn is charming. We had one of the Chalet Suites and it was so nice; jacuzzi, fireplace, private balcony with view, breakfast delivered to our room each morning. The breakfast was enough for 2 meals; eggs, hashbrowns, waffles, meat and cheese plate, baked goods. Our very favorite was the hot cinnamon buns. Yum!! The property is beautiful and loads of ammenities, even a hiking trail. We enjoyed the fire pit in the evening with a complimentary glass of wine. Hanneke and George know how to treat their guests. We will certainly return.

This was actually my first stay in a B&B. Found them on-line while searching for lodging in this area. This is a busy time of year here, and we were very lucky to get the last available suite. There are two separate places to stay on this property. We chose the Romantic Hide-Away suite. Private, furnished with everything you can think of, and lots you won't think of! It's beautiful, very peaceful, and everyone is extremely friendly, both on the phone and in person. George personally assisted us with parking our trailer and Tim was friendly and helpful any time we needed assistance. The food (breakfast, obviously!) is delicious and plentiful. The area is all non-smoking, which is a HUGE plus! Easily located with our GPS. I really hope we can come back again and again!
