Have a taste for a 50s diner on small town main street? The Soda Shop is not an idealized version, but the real thing, a diner that has been around for years and is like a trip back a little in time.
The Soda Shop is on Main Street in Davidson, just across from Davidson college. It can hold about 25 patrons in booths or tables. The decor has a lot of the original blondish wood and mementos from the 50s. The menu is essentially what you would expect from a diner, with breakfast offerings in the morning and burgers and sandwiches for lunch. The menu isn't strictly nostalgic as several of the offerings have been updated (e.g. chicken, a veggie burger etc.).
I ordered a hamburger with blue cheese. It was perfectly cooked and very juicy - probably the best burger I've had in awhile. The service was attentive and courteous. Overall, we had a very good experience.
A more modern but less authentic option, and fun in its own way, is the Char-Grill about a half-mile away on the road into Davidson.
