We were looking for an affordable place to stay for our wedding night (without having to stay in some cookie-cutter chain hotel with no view) as we were on a limited budget. We booked the Riverfront (#4) room at Fibber Magee's and overall were very happy with our stay. The room featured a queen bed in a beautiful, ornate bed frame and a balcony that overlooked the river and a great view of Chimney Rock. We were pleased to find that Chimney Rock was partly lit up at night. It was really enjoyable to sit out on the balcony during our evenings there, listening to the river and enjoying the light mountain breezes. It really felt like we were really getting an escape from our daily grind though we had only driven about an hour from our home in Arden, NC!
The rooms and common areas are not what you might call spacious, but it is a historic building so that didn't bother us. It actually was very cozy and homey :) We came in late at night after our wedding, but Carol kindly left the key to our room in a place outside with a complimentary small bag of the coffee they brew there, which I thought was a sweet touch. We met Carol the next morning in the gift shop downstairs and found her to be very sweet, friendly and accomodating. Her husband seems a little more reserved. We actually didn't meet him until we were checking out but he was polite and thanked us for our stay and asked us to visit again.
As far as amenities, this place is great for those who are pretty self-sufficient and don't need much to keep them happy (that's us!) There's a continental breakfast offered on weekdays and a cooked breakfast on weekends. The shower temp in our room seemed a bit wonky our first night there, went from really cold to really hot back and forth during my first shower there but seemed to level out the next night we were there. The mattress was a little stiff for me but that's just a personal preference. I loved that our room was right in the middle of the main street through town so we could meander through the shops and still easily find our room.
The biggest bummer we had is finding that the place is not currently pet - friendly. Carol's husband told us that they were considering making one area pet-friendly but even then they would only allow little dogs so our sweet, quiet 75lb lab would not be allowed :( Still, this place is a great overall value for those who might just want a quick weekend getaway. Lots of good food and fun shops in the area, not to mention the putt-putt course and Chimney Rock Park!
If you love the sounds of nature, ask for a "riverfront" room!
