That this place used to be a La Quinta explains things a bit.
This is a hotel with exterior room access only, ie no indoor hallways etc. The windows of many of these rooms are covered with plastic, under renovations apparently. This wasn't made known to me when I booked the room at the front desk.
But the main issue was the smell when I opened the door ! It was an over-masked type of smell, like they used too much scented cleaner to cover something up... but the scented cleaner isn't very nice. I almost switched rooms, but didn't want the hassle. I left the door ajar (with the night lock on) and cranked the A/C to max, and that together with my adjustment of the scent seemed to help.
Nice king bed, quite comfortable. High speed wireless worked well. One-cup-at-a-time coffee maker was good and quick.
This hotel is under the approach path for Charlotte-Douglas Int'l Airport, so if you don't like the roar of jets going overhead, you might not want this hotel ! The door sealed the noise ok and the A/C fan helped too. I am a pilot actually so I quite honestly like the sound of jets cruising low overhead.
Although breakfast is available from 6:00 am onwards, when I went down at 8:00 am the staff were just making coffee then, and the garbage was overflowing.
I don't recommend the pool (see picture).
There are about 10 hotels within a mile of this hotel all along Queen City Dr. and the area. There is a Food Lion about 1/2 mile away.
