“A Nice Hotel In a Lovely Area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

My family and I were traveling up from Florida and decided to stop over in Charlotte. My friend had given me a few areas to stay in, one of which was South Park. We arrived early evening and checked in quickly so we could go out and grab a bite to eat. Check in was easy and quick and the staff was friendly. Overall the hotel was nice, not fancy as you might expect in South Park, but certainly more than acceptable. Our room was laid out nicely and was clean...including the bathroom. We drove a few minutes to a great restaurant (one of many in the area) and in driving through the area, noticed it was very nice, beautiful houses and lots of shopping....similar to Buckhead in Atlanta. So, if in Charlotte and need a place to stay for a day or two, we would recommend the Renaissance South Park.

To be fair, great location, very nice hotel, good staff....but if you book an event here, you will get screwed unless you NEGOTIATE everything. wifi, room charges, food, AV, etc. ask for free room nights if you guarantee many nights with your event, they will not just give them to you. ask about the 22% service fee...seriously, ask them about the 22% service fee. they will absolutely provide you good service and that is admirable. but beofe the event, you are already totally screwed. hotel was purchased and operated by Marriott family, trust me that they know how to make lots of money on your event. if you dont negotiate wifi...that will be $14/per person. that is just the tip of the fleecing. good luck.

Room Tip: rooms are nice...be prepared to pay for wi-fi. and other bs fees.

The pictures portray a recently renovated boutique-like hotel in the South Park area – just outside of downtown Charlotte. However, we found the Renaissance Charlotte South Park Hotel to be a budget hotel trying to act like a high-end luxury hotel. At $200+ per night, I would have expected more.

The property is directly across the street from South Park Mall – a luxury shopping mall – and situated within a small business park. From the outside, the property appears well kept. Upon arrival, there was no obvious sign of a bellman so we had to unpack our car and carry our luggage into the hotel then race back outside (in the rain) to park the car. The main lobby was eye-catching and well designed. The check in process was fast and efficient but we had to carry our bags to our room. The halls smelled like cheap industrial cleanser – like lemon scented Mr. Clean. The smell could be overwhelming to people that are sensitive to odors; it made us feel as though we were staying at a budget motel. Even worse, our room had a fairly strong musty/mildew smell. My wife and I had to buy Lysol, from the Rite Aid across the street, to mask the odor. The comforter had stains on it – an obvious sign that it was not cleaned/changed after each stay. The convenience refrigerator was dirty and many of the in room amenities appeared shop worn. We contemplated leaving and finding a better hotel but there was a large convention in town and there were few hotels in the area that were any more luxurious.

We presented our concerns to management and they were very considerate and eager to resolve the issues. They offered to move us to another room but we found the alternatives equally poor/musty -- so we stayed in our room – they even offered to buy vanilla scented sticks to mask the smell but it would have resulted in vanilla scented mildew. Despite the issues, I can’t stress enough -- the staff was very attentive to our needs even though they couldn't be resolved to our satisfaction. We were very grateful.

In summary, the property is just okay. Before making reservations to stay at this property consider your options, compare prices and set your expectations.

Room Tip: All the rooms were more/less the same.

My husband and I stayed here as a night away from the kids. The staff was very friendly upon check in and check out. The room was very clean. The bed was super comfy. We had room service for breakfast - service was outstanding and food was great. Would absolutely recommend this hotel.

We had a great experience at this hotel. I travelled with my family for a business / leisure trip to Charlotte. We chose this hotel because of the reputation of Renaissance and the location. The hotel is in walking distance to the South park Mall.
The hotel staff were very friendly and happy to help us with our needs. The lobby is very smart and the decor very modern and fresh. The room we had was clean and neat and the beds were comfortable. My children were a bit disappointed that the pool was being cleaned and unavailable until later in the day. Once they were able to use the pool they were happy.
The hotel provided a lovely breakfast downstairs and the wait staff were amazing. They were happy to help with special orders for the picky kids.
Overall I would recommend this hotel as a great place to stay

We spent the weekend at this hotel, even though we live in town, as our house is on the market and we didn't want to be around for a couple of open houses. We had never been to the hotel before but were pleasantly surprised by the large lobby, bar/restaurant, fountain and outdoor sitting area, complete with fire pits. There were refreshments in the lobby - fruit infused water, cannolis, even grasshopper martinis! My sons really enjoyed the indoor pool, and I liked the small outdoor lounging area connected to the pool, and the clean, well-equipped fitness room with a view of the pool (and complimentary water and fruit). The pool did have a LOT of chlorine - both my husband and older son had red, stinging eyes after going in. Our room was fine - nothing exceptional - but it was nice to have a refrigerator. Beds were comfortable. We got a rate that included breakfast and we were so pleased with the breakfast. There was a hot buffet with eggs, bacon, potatoes and oatmeal, as well as fruit, cereal, muffins, etc. plus you could order pancakes and waffles at no additional charge. The grownups each got a pot of coffee, and on the way out there was a to-go coffee station featuring starbucks coffee -- a nice touch! The breakfast was definitely a good deal! The location is right across the street from the upscale SouthPark Mall, and within walking distance of several restaurants. I will definitely refer visiting friends to this hotel - it was very comfortable with a lot of little extras which made a big difference.

Room Tip: We tried to get a suite, but were told that there is only one at the hotel and it was not available...

I stayed here for one night on a business trip and was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming the staff was - from doorman to desk staff to room service staff.

Everyone was so nice - kathleen at the front desk made me feel very welcome as a platinum member.

The rooms themselves and the hotel is nicely decorated as other renaissance hotels are. Rooms are nice and quiet with good heating/cooling units. There was a noisy child next door but I couldn't hear them once my door was shut.

Room service was pretty good - not amazing, but decent.

Location is right next to a giant mall - so you can head over there for food/shopping if needed. Parking is convenient out front and the cost of the room was amazing! Put this hotel in NYC and you would add $250 to the room for sure.

Room Tip: I bet there is a view of Charlotte from some rooms, but mine overlooked the side of the building and...
