Lulu's is a great little restaurant located in a small bungalow on Central Avenue in Charlotte's Plaza Midwood area. We went for dinner on a Friday night and were so thrilled we returned on Sunday for brunch (who could pass up creme brulee french toast?) Although most of their dishes are french inspired, there is nothing pretenious about the place. The food is beautifully presented. 'Large plates", which are entree sized, include Tuna tagine ($19) as well as beef, duck, lobster and pork dishses. The "small plates" which are appetizer sized include a vidalia onion tartlet ($7), ginger calamari ($8) and lamb lollipops ($13). There are enough meatless dishes for a vegetarian diner to have a decent selection. Whatever you do, don't miss the frites (fries) which are served very hot in a cone and are plenty big enough to share. Also not to be missed are the wild strawberry tart and the classic creme brulee.
The wait staff is friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the food, and are very willing to make recommendations if you're having a tough time deciding. They have a modest wine and beer list, but do not serve cocktails. The night we were there, we saw everything from blue jeans to cocktail dresses, but most patrons appeared to be from the neighborhood and were very casually dressed.
Lulu's serves lunch and dinner M-F and brunch and dinner on the weekend. If you enjoy interesting food, in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere, you'll be very pleased with Lulu's.
