“Central But Not Perfect”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2011

I stayed at the Dunhill for two nights on business.

Pros:
- Central location
- Free parking in the lot next door
- Delicious free breakfast with room rate
- Room in the "-06" line is very spacious
- Free water and soda in mini fridge
- Free cookies and coffee/tea in lobby in evening
- Great fast free wireless internet

Cons:
- Room and other parts of hotel are very dark. Old building so natural light is not priority, perhaps?
- Room felt somewhat outdated in terms of furniture and style
- Room was somewhat loud from street at night
- Walk from parking garage to hotel feels not completely secure at early and late hours

Room Tip: The rooms in the 06 line are larger than usual

I have wanted to stay in the Dunhill for 10 years now, after walking past it daily to and from work while living in Charlotte. Finally, I got around to it on a little weekend vacation. While the rooms were not *quite* as nice as I'd hoped (it may be time for refurbishment)... it's charm was still easily apparent.

We had a corner room, and while the bedroom definitely could use an update, the large marble bathroom was lovely. Everything was clean, though again, the furniture/linens in the main room were a looking well-used. That said, it was quite comfortable and I had a very nice night's sleep.

Breakfast was included with our room rate and was served in the restaurant below. Delicious and filling. We also had dinner in the restaurant--almost all of the ingredients were sourced locally, and the food was very good, but not excellent.

Charming bar and lobby. Would definitely stay here again for an urban retreat.

You can't get a better location - especially for the money!! We booked the weekend to see the spring NASCAR Race. On the day before the race, we walked to everything we wanted to see. We walked to the NASCAR Hall of Fame with no problem (even in gruelling heat that weekend!), we walked to the fabulous McNinch House Restaurant (if you want a fancy, romantic dinner out), we walked to church on Sunday, we did bars, shops, museums - we walked it all (and we are NOT "walking" type people, we are "drive the parking lot for an hour rather than park in the back and walk" people). The rooms and hotel are gorgeous. Historic, but not "old." Everything has been beautifully restored/re-done. The bathrooms - marble tiled - are great. The little bar, the little restaurant. It's all great. It's humble in comparison to other "four star" hotels - no huge grandeur here, but still felt very luxurious. The staff - A-MAZ-ING! We were greeted every time we walked through. The complimentary sodas and waters are a nice touch! My only complaint is about the bed. We booked through a "price before we tell the hotel" site. I called a few days before to ask for a King room - was told they could not do that (even though it was "room chosen at check in"). So, if getting a certain bed is important, make sure you specifically book for that. The bed (which ended up being a queen for two adults) was lumpy and too soft (and I like a soft bed!). So, we woke up a bit sore each morning. Still, even that was not enough to dampen all the highlights of the hotel. We had an awesome view from the 7th floor (of 10). At least our "queen" room was on a corner so we had 2 windows. The rooms here are NOT huge - they are "historic" which means that they ARE smaller than you'd get at another "four start" hotel. But, we still had a TV bigger than our one at home and plenty of space to stretch out (only a desk chair, no other chair to relax in, though).

Highly recommend it - VERY cozy and sweet and a great romantic weekend!!

Room Tip: Corner queen was isolated and SILENT!!

What a surprise when we checked into the Dunhill and found that they had upgraded us to the penthouse corner suite, normally $875 compared with the $144 king room we had booked. Fantastic two rooms with original marble floors, TWO balconies overlooking the city each from a different view, and antique-look furnishings that were elegant but cozy. Even were we not upgraded, the hotel was loaded with charm, the location was central to everything and staff very friendly. Breakfast was included and delicious. I asked in the morning why we had been upgraded and received the mysterious answer "you must have just gotten lucky". Maybe because it was our first stay or we got in at midnight and looked like weary travelers. Whatever the reason, what a nice - and smart - thing to do. We're fans now!

Room Tip: If you can afford it: 1005 corner penthouse suite

I stayed at the Dunhill for one night in December 2010 with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary. I called the Dunhill to inquire about rates (Ask for AAA!!!) and received free breakfast and a beautiful room for at least $50 cheaper than any other hotel around. This historic hotel is BEAUTIFUL, well-kept, and CLEAN. The rooms are a bit small, but the beds are so comfy and it is very quiet for being in the heart of Charlotte. Walking distance to both the Bobcats Arena and Bank of America Stadium. Since it was raining, the hotel even offered to drive us over to the Stadium in game traffic, for free! Such nice people. The restaurant on the premises was delicious and the free breakfast with AAA was great! Convenient, clean, quality, you can't beat it!!!

Room Tip: ask for the AAA rates!

Went up to Charlotte for a one night stay so we could see a concert at the McGlohon Theater. I'm pretty sure I could throw a rock and hit the theater, we were that close. The staff was superb - each and every one. Parking was a breeze. Plenty of great restaurants nearby. Well within my budget.

This was the perfect stay.
