“improved theater providing offerring options of entertainment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

it was a new experience providing good service. the downtown area is a very family driven environment. museums including nascar are among many entertainment options. many restaurant and bar facilities range in price for a reasonable entertainment night.

“Best seating ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Incredibly comfortable seats, and super-steep seating so that there's just no way the person in front of you will block the screen.

“Cool Movie Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Studio Movie Grill was on Groupon so we gave it a try. You can make seat reservations, so you don't have to "hope" there is no one already in the top center seats :) Seats are comfortable, and there is a buzzer on the tray table top. It is actually NOT distracting to have some one bring you food/drinks during a movie. There is a lounge/bar you can wait in before and after the movie. Oh, and they validate parking!

“You Can Eat Dinner In the Movie!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

This is a fun theater in that you can order dinner and eat in the movie itself. And the prices are reasonable. The one slight drawback is that the movies are just a hair out of date, making the theater less full than otherwise might be the case. On the other hand, that means you don't have to have someone crowding your elbows while you eat.

“Getting Better each time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Studio Movie Grill @ EpiCentre is Charlottes only true upscale theatre. The uneducated compare it to Cinnebarre, however if you've ever been to Cineebarre you know that the movie selection, seats, & food are all very low rent. No comparision to SMG Epicentre where the seats are huge & plush.

To be clear, there are some bugs SMG needs to workout within it's first 6 months in Charlotte. Unlike with the old Epicentre Theatre/Mez, they come into the theatre to take your food/drink orders & deliver the food & check to you in the theatre. This leads to tons of staff roaming the theatres to take or deliver orders. They typicall stoop down when possible to avoid blocking the screen, however when they are delivering food, it's all but impossible to do so. So go early enough so you can order & receive your food before the actual movie starts. If everyone would just do that, problem solved.

I would recommend brining your own 3D glasses, because they don't seem to be cleaning them between shows (based on my 2 visits for 3D movies where there were dust particles in several pairs I tried). They are also very narrow & cause distorations near the top & bottom of the lenses.

They've had some trouble getting the lighting balance correct. On the one hand it can't be so dark that people can't see what they are eating, but it can't be so much light that it distracts from the movie. I've been & seen it both ways. But at my most recent visit, they had track lighting on the outter edges of the the viewing area & not lights on in the interior viewing area. I think that was the perfect solution.

Now the other part of the lighting problem affects the servers & subsequently the guests. It is difficult for them to find the correct seats, but they are getting better & better as they get used to the theatre layouts. Unfortunately they aren't all laid out the same. The answer is to use some kind of glow n the dark markings on the floor. If not a seat at least an aisle marker.

All in all, this is better than the Epicentre model & I so love seeing a late movie in a comfy chair, with good food & no nightclub music interrupting the movie (Fond farewell Mez!).

Give it a try.

TIP...currently on groupon...SMG tickets for $5, good until June. Read fine print cause you will still have to pay difference for 3D movies & pay the $1.50 fee per seat. And reserve your seat on their website in advance if you want to avoid sitting in the 1st or 2nd row!
