I stayed at the Residence Inn Piper Glen with my sister after she had a surgical procedure at a nearby medical office, and everything was comfortable and attractive. I stopped by the hotel early in the morning while my sister was "under the knife" to register and ask for early check in if possible. The desk clerk was very helpful, but had the personality of a block of wood, a PLAIN block. I didn't think his demeanor was at all welcoming at a Hotel that in every other way I was very impressed with. He gave me a room immediately, even though it was only 9:00am, and I unloaded the car and proceeded up the elevator to the third floor; I think there are five. I asked for something on the first, but this was all that was available at the time, or so I thought. When I opened the door, I saw pieces of the air-conditioner all over the bedroom and living room, and work orders and tools. The AC unit was completely dismantled, so I called down and told him that all was not right with the decision to give me this room, and was told that someone would be up. I decided to go down and see if they would let me eat breakfast, since I couldn't hang around in the disaster area that would be my suite, and when I passed the desk, the clerk said he needed to move me to another room (by this point, I had just about figured that out), but that one wasn't ready yet. He said to help myself to the buffet (that's included in the price of your room), so I did, and it was very nice- eggs, bacon or sausage, biscuits, pancakes, doughnuts and pastries, cereal, fruit, etc. There's a nice little seating area in the lobby too with a big flat screen TV. I waited there reading a book until the clerk called me over at 10:15 and told me my new room was ready, and that it was on the first floor! So it was worth waiting on. It was also pretty close to one of the side entrances to the hotel, a door one could only access if in possession of a room key. The suite was nice- VERY clean- two rooms consisting of a living room/eat-in kitchen combo, and a bedroom (ours had a king size bed). The bath is nice- the sink area is along side of the bedroom, and the toilet and shower are closed off. The kitchen is very small but has a dishwasher, sink, stove-top, and full sized refrigerator. There is a small table that's perfect for two. The living room had a sofa, occasional chair, TV, and a nice big window. The sofa was comfortable enough to sleep on. In the bedroom, the bed was very comfortable as well, and there was another nice sized window and TV. Outside our room, in the courtyard, there was a small basketball court, and the fenced-in pool. They were very nice and I could see the guests really enjoying both.
Across the street from the hotel is a very nice shopping center with good restaurants like Firebirds and nice retail stores. This outlying area of Charlotte, actually in Matthews, is an upscale neighborhood with beautiful homes and lots of trees.
We will be staying in Charlotte again for another medical procedure in the near future, and it will be at this fine establishment. Funny, I noticed while I was waiting in the lobby, there was a Marriott represetative there doing an EXTREMELY thorough examination of the hotel, down to the white glove test. He was very friendly and chatted with the guests, but took his job very seriously and missed nothing. There was a thumbtack in the wall above the front desk, and even though I hadn't seen it when I checked in (and I usually notice everything), he did and pulled it out with an admonishment to the wood-block clerk about leaving it there. It's nice to see someone going around and making sure that everything that can be done, IS being done to keep things looking their best. Is it too much to ask? Certainly not at this hotel.
