Myself, my husband and our 2 year old stayed here after a one day business visit to Charlotte. We had planned to drive home, but were tired at the end of the day and decided to stay overnight at the last minute.

We grabbed one of those coupon books and tried a few other places, all over which were booked. We tried this place (called) and found that they had room. We were given the coupon book rate of $59.95 for a Monday night. Funny, when we got there, we saw this huge hotel and realized that we were the ONLY guests- a little spooky! We never saw anyone else other than 2 staff members our entire stay.

They have changed the name now to "Sunset Inn" by the way; maybe it's under new management.

Basically, the place is alright. Definitely nothing to write home about. The front desk man, an Irish man, was very friendly and helpful. He gave us extra pillows, suggested restaurants, and tried to be as accommodating as possible. The room was very basic- there is no door to the bathroom, so make sure you're not sharing it with anyone you aren't comfy with. The sink did not drain well, which kind of grosses me out. The carpet was worn looking but the room seemed clean. I still took precautions and wiped it down with sanitizing wipes, mainly because I have a 2 year old. We ordered pizza and ate it in the bed because there was no table in the room.

The elevator smelt like urine the first night- the next morning it smelled better. The swimming pool was very small and not too appealing (it did kind of look like an oversized bathtub). We decided not to get in, but this was because it smelled strongly of chlorine (that's a good thing), and we had already checked out of our room. It did look clean, though.

The continental breakfast sucked, to be blunt. There was no-name brand frosted flakes and raisin bran and they tasted cheap. My son loves muffins but handed these back to us after taking a few bites! The milk also tasted weird, so I didn't drink it. We ended up going to Waffle House.

They lock the hotel doors at night, the hostess said. I'm not sure if that made me feel better or worse.....Also, there's a sign in the parking lot that says the guest assumes all risk when parking in the parking lot. Hmmmm....we were sure to take out all our valuables and we parked in front of a light close to the entrance.

Finally, I woke up in the night to use the bathroom and after turning on the light, noticed a little spider running across the pillow where my son's head was laying. It wasn't a big spider (it really was teeny-tiny, like a pinhead), but I guess the thought of there being one in the bed is kind of unnerving.

The bed was very comfy, though. The Irish man said they had just ordered in all new mattresses and he said they were Sertas.

To sum it up, I guess for $59.95 it isn't too bad. If you just want a cheap place that is fairly clean to lay your head at night, this will do. It didn't feel too unsafe (I've definitely seen worse), and at least the staff was pleasant. I don't think I would return, though. Actually, I couldn't wait to leave! It was just something kind of depressing about this place!

Good location close to Interstate 77. Hallways had odd smell. Room size was okay for 2A, 2C for one night. But that stupid sliding door to the washroom (no handle or knob) was tough to move back and forth. And why they put a sink outside the toilet is beyond me. As my daughter pointed out: " Dad, people will have gone to the bathroom and will have to use their dirty hands to open the door before they can wash their hands." Yuck! The pool is an oversized bathtub, ridiculously small. At breakfast, we had to wait for incoming cleaning staff to finish making their breakfasts before we could utilize the toaster which was broken (only two slots working). Breakfast selection was toast, bagels, a couple of cereals and some fruit - apples that were wrinkled and soft. Since we only paid $55 Canadian, I guess we shouldn't have expected more.

The hotel is billed as new but new must be a few years old. The breakfast buffet was not at all what I thought, not enough variety. The pool is TINY-4 1/2 at the deep end-a few strokes and you have covered the area. The bathrooms are actually inside the room, meaning there is no separate space for it, everything is literally in one sqaure space of the room. Everyone can hear what you are doing! There was a frig and microwave which was a difinite plus. The mattress was horrible, my back could not take it. We had to switch rooms because the shower in room 200 broke. The staff was friendly, however. The hotel is not far from downtown in one direction or the big out let mall in the other direction. Overall it was basically ok.

We have been visiting with Beverly for many years now and have always felt at home at the Inn. She has been great in scheduling our breakfasts to our days activities etc. This July she had several vegetarians there when we were visiting...no problem! We always recommend the Banner Elk Inn to our friends because we can be certain that they will be treated to an "at home" time or "privacy only" time, all you need do is ask. Certainly the Banner Elk Inn will always be our "home" whenever we attend the Highland Games in the mountains of North Carolina!!!

I chose this hotel because it was advertised as "NEW" and "CLEAN". It was really neither. The pool had a green algae growth in it and the water surface had a greasy film floating on top; needless to say I didnt use it. I mentioned it to the young guy working the desk in the evening and he was totally disinterested in my report and only replied "Well, I aint the one who cleans it". He was never at the desk but always lounged across two chairs in the visitors TV area with his head buried in the TV and the sound blasting away. I have never met a more slack and rude host at any hotel in my life as this young man was. I inquired about area restaurants and he said he didnt really know because he lived in Concord and "only worked here". NOT friendly, NOT helpful and NOT interested in customers at all. The room was ok but needed dusting badly. The shelves were dusty and the light fixtures had cobwebs hanging from them. The TV remote did not work and neither did the hair dryer. The carpet was damp and musty. I would not recommend this hotel as you can get a better deal with more amenities for less money a short drive away. There are no good restaurants nearby and the staff doesnt know where any are either. I was very disappointed. It was misrepresented for sure. I am a building inspector and if the place were in my control area I would have closed the pool for unsanitary conditions. It looked unhealthy to me and people were still using it. Overall it was not worth $63.00 per night and was a bad experience.
